TDI isn't much better by the depth numbers, than DSAT. Their entry level deco course (no mix allowed) is 150ft, and they argue their deep air course is 180 or so (Extended range). I think Brett made that argument a few decades ago when it might have had a hint of realism...........good morning cowboys, it 2007, time to wakey wakey, or take up golf.

Just curious, Steve, what do you think the DIR philosophy will be on deep air once the helium supply is depleted? ...and unless there is an unknown supply somewhere it will be either depleted or out of 99% of the population's price range within the next 10 years at the rate we're using it now. Will it be time to take up snorkeling...and golf? ;)

I realise that I am resurrecting a thread that is over a year old, but if you don't like the PADI/DSAT Tech course, what agency would you recommend? (Serious question, I am not trolling).
I'm of the opinion that it's the instructor who makes the course. The DSAT Tec 1 book is OK, but these guys are right about the picts and demos...not very well done. If your instructor is worth his salt he'll point the mistakes out as "non-examples." The guy here who teaches DSAT courses is a very good instructor with a lot of technical diving experience in several areas. I'd recommend the class locally just to give new to tech divers a chance to work with him. I can pretty much guarantee his students won't be kneeling on the bottom and dragging their stage bottles around by there reg hoses.

This is not a new problem. Other than North America, helium prices is always been high. So some divers suck it up and pay the price. Others push the usage depth of air as much as possible.

But DIR will still be DIR.

But DIR divers will respond different ways. I've seen/heard of more and more ex DIR divers that have moved on to rebreathers. Not so much in saving money on Helium (the price of the RB and all the training that goes with that pays for a lot of helium.), but because of the logistal issues that RB's help.

Others might give up the tech realm. Others might start using air.

None of these "responses" though are DIR.

Rebreathers are going to kill you;)

Yes...and supposedly, they talk about shooting a lift bag a depth by wrapping your legs around a rock or have your buddy hold you down. I have yet to see this, so it might be an urban scuba legend.

Well, it doesn't have to be a rock... The manual just says, "At the same time, if you can, hold on to something with your legs, or have your team mates hold you down..."

"The more you fill, the better!"

That's what she said...?

There are a few posts in here along the lines of: "I did the training with X Agency/Instructor, but I purchased the PADI/DSAT manuals as they were better". Where do you purchase the manuals? I have searched for them before, but never found anywhere that sells them. TDI manuals seem easy to get ahold of, but not (to me anyhow) DSAT.

Any PADI shop can order them for you. They may ask you why you want em and some shops may tell you they don't do tech. BUt there is no restriction on who can buy em. Heck if you're willing to pay any PADI Instructor can order them for you. Maybe even an AI or DM to.
