I've seen some conflicting stories, unless PADI recently changed, that a diver has to be AOW to do the Deep Diver Specialty. Other places I see OW certified people can do it as well since it used to be listed under Adventure Diver. Can someone please clarify this for me. Thanks for your help!

The pre-requisite is Adventure Diver rating, which is essentially 3 of the dives you do towards AOW. I suggest just asking for the specialty at the LDS - I doubt they'll have an issue teaching you before you get AOW.

The prerequisite for enrollment on the PADI Deep Diver specialty course is 'Adventure Diver or Higher'. Very few people bother with the Adventure Diver certification - and move directly to AOW. Thus, realistically, PADI AOW is needed to do the PADI Deep Diver course.

AOW students complete a 'Deep Adventure Dive' as part of the AOW course. That's a single dive intro - and not the same as the 4 dive specialty course. Each of the dives on the AOW course is called an 'adventure dive'...and represents an intro to that activity, by performance of the first dive of the corresponding specialty course.

In short, the AOW Deep Dive is the same as Dive 1 from the Deep Specialty course.
