I did all my certification stuff years ago, so I don't remember. But I have a friend taking Advanced Open Water, and the instructor said it's mandatory to have the blue PADI log book. My friend has 3 log books already, but the instructor said he still had to buy the $16 log book to pass the class. Is this true, or is the instructor/shop owner just trying to scam him for money.

????????????
It may be mandatory for his shop but it is not a standard. A logbook is required and the OW crewpaks come with a log book or log pages, or at least did. My PADI AOW instructor had his own log pages printed up to fit into a log binder and then sold those. Cheaper, better laid out, and I still use them. Although I made stickers to cover some of the page for my deco and trimix dives since they were not set up for tech. AOW has pages for the logbook in the Adventures crewpak, or did, but a damn notebook with the required info would still meet the definition. He needs to ask what else they are taking advantage of him for?

The PADI requirements are that you have a "Log Book", type and style are not specified.

FYI - The "blue" book has been set up to record training dives. As such, it has pages specific to a number of the Adventure dives, such as Deep and Navigation. There are also other places to record certifications, etc. The blue book is provided as part of the OW program. Did your friend do his OW through PADI? If so, does he still have his old "training" log book? Even though the dive pages would have been filled up with dives, the specific AOW pages would still be blank.

My thoughts exactly. He is taking it through a University and the fees for AOW are crazy, but he is a vet so the VA pays for everything except the books. He thought it wasn't right, and it's been so long for me I can't remember. He said he told the instructor he already had a log book, but the instructor said it's PADI standard that he uses the PADI logbook for AOW. I think after this class he will stay away from that shop.

He did, but it was years ago when he did it, and he lost that book.

A log book is required. There isn't any specification as to the type of log book in the standards. How much profit can the instructor be making on a log book? If he is having to dig that deep he needs to re-evaluate his course prices or something.

That's what my friend mentioned, but nope it had to be the magic blue padi log book according to this guy.

LOL

I am taking my AOW too, The only thing that was sold to me was the blue text book. ( of which i was told, I only need to worry about 3 chapters) I plan on using my original ow log book for my logs, but I do not think my LDS cares. I think they are only looking for that I have my flashlight, smb, whistle...the safety stuff. Not a book.

I am pretty sure my LDS likes the relationship we have, they do not lie to me, and I give them money frequently

How silly all this sounds, like a children's book: "What Color is Your Logbook?" Are you allowed to decorate the cover of your logbook, draw stuff on it? Can you write in another language, or in a code, so hostile forces from Moronistan or NAUI, or Zombies from NASDS will be unable to read your data and use it for evil purposes? Can you just write all required information regarding each dive on waterproof index cards and holepunch them into a roladex? Do you get a secret decoder ring with your special blue logbook?

Send a message to PADI and ask them....see what happens! (insert evil smile here)
