Quotation from John Cronin's essay on the beginning of PADI, in The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving, p 1-53:
Serious ex post facto rationalization (to be gernerous: maybe just marketing).

Thalassamania-

I am done with this. It was stupid of me to let myself get pulled into this discussion as I know better. Have fun on the internet.
I am just saying that if PADI starts requiring anybody to recert periodically, they will lose many to other agencies, or no agency at all.

The market won't bear it, in my opinion. (Just my opinion) Not meant to upset the "professionals" that's kind of a silly term anyway...How long is the training?
Fair enough. And, you're probably right. What should be required then, is for all agencies to require the recerts. Hey - just because it won't work doesn't mean it isn't still a good idea! (it says right in my profile that I'm an idealist. :))
PADI Instructors are already giving PADI too much of a cut. Somebody should look at the number of years it takes before the average Instructor figures that out. Because I don't see too many older, experienced PADI professionals doing it as a mainstay too many years, do you? Guess Walter and I are just old and grumpy. :D

Maybe it is different in Canada...I'm just asking.
By doing it as a mainstay, do you mean instructing full time? I'd agree that most people aren't doing that, and if they are, not for very long. But I don't think that's because the PADI cut is too big and they finally figure that out, but rather that the whole pie is too small. In my (limited) experience only a small handful of instructors are doing it full time, and all of those work in a dive shop as well. Here it is difficult to teach full time, as we're so far away from any real diving.

And by the way, there's nothing wrong with being old and grumpy. ;)

Consider the Tupperware marketing... like Amway- you gotta get your distributors! Or how about Dianetics?

It's the pyramid model.

Would you rather dig for gold in the dirt or sell the prospector blue jeans, Mr Levi?

You have to pay into the system long enough to be at the top of that food pyramid.

The real experts have changed their State's laws to make IDC's State Regulated.

It's the money. That, and being a Course Director.

Go flog your trinkets, that is what you do, and leave the discussion of issues to those who have something to say. Bye.

With your 4,212 posts in the last 13 months I just cannot compete. You are truly an internet legend and a scubaboard hero. This is a title in which you must be incredibly proud. :rofl3:

Later.
