Since people say this is not possible...

Where does one sign to take the theory part of the DM course online? If you can't I am calling your bluff here! I called PADI and they said they do not have DM course online.

Weird.

I just went to PADI The Way the World Learns to Dive? - Find Scuba Diving Lessons, Scuba Certifications, Dive Shops, Dive Resorts, Scuba Gear, Scuba Diving Trips and Vacations, Scuba Diving Careers where I clicked on the menu item "PADI courses." I then went to the "professional level courses" line and clicked on the "divemaster" hyperlink. I then clicked on the banner underneath the red text that says
Get started now with Divemaster Online!

Then I clicked on "purchase an e-learning course" and from the drop-down menu I selected "Divemaster - English."

I clicked on "course details" and got this in a pop-up:

PADI Divemaster Course - More Info

What does it cover?
The PADI Divemaster course is the first professional level within the PADI System of diver education and allows you to work as a training assistant on PADI courses and programs, supervise certified divers during pleasure diving experiences, and conduct some PADI programs independently. Becoming a PADI Divemaster consists of the following segments: knowledge development, practical application and the Divemaster final exam. The online portion of the course, PADI Divemaster Online, covers nine topics that prepare you for the practical sessions needed to complete the Divemaster course. Through PADI's eLearning® system and practical segments of the Divemaster course, you become well prepared to work as a PADI Divemaster
What are the prerequisites for PADI Divemaster Online?
Prior to enrolling in PADI Divemaster Online, you must be at least 18 years old, have a current medical attesting to your diving fitness signed by a physician within the previous 12 months, and be a certified PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and PADI Rescue or hold qualifying certifications from another dive training organization. You must also have completed a Emergency First Response (EFR) Primary and Secondary Care course (or other sanctioned first aid and CPR course) within the past 24 months and be able to prove that you have completed at least 40 dives (60 before being able to complete the Divemaster course with experience of deep dives, night dives and underwater navigation). If you have any questions as to whether you meet the necessary prerequisites, please contact your PADI Retailer or Resort.
How does it work?
After enrolling, PADI's eLearning system presents you with interactive presentations that include videos, audio, graphics and reading. Short quizzes let you gauge your progress and review and correct anything you might happen to miss. This lets you move through the program efficiently and at your own pace.
What does it cost?
The eLearning portion of the course is $200 (US) nonrefundable. Your PADI Retailer or Resort will charge you for the practical application portion of the course.

Other costs – There is a separate application fee due to PADI that needs to be submitted with the Divemaster application once the course is successfully completed.

Materials – The PADI Divemaster Online program will provide you with perpetual access to an ebook version of the PADI Divemaster manual, a required material. However, to complete the PADI Divemaster course, you also need a current PADI Instructor Manual, both the Table RDP and eRDPML, The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving, and a set of the PADI Divemaster slates. There are other required materials and equipment, some of which you already have. Your PADI Retailer or Resort will guide and counsel you on what you need, and will make suggestions to help you prepare for a valuable course experience.

Contact the PADI Retailer or Resort where you will complete the practical segments of the course to discuss total courses costs, equipment, materials and logistical requirements.
What else is required to become a PADI Divemaster?
Once you successfully complete Divemaster Online, you will need to successfully complete several practical assessments, workshops and other assignments with your PADI Instructor. You will also need to complete the Divemaster Final Exam as well as meet the professionalism criteria.
How long do you have to complete the eLearning course?
The eLearning segment of the course is available for one year from the time of course registration. Though you must finish the online portion of the course within that time frame, you will have perpetual access to the ebook version of the PADI Divemaster manual.
How do you document that you've completed the eLearning segment?
Once you finish the eLearning portion of the course, your dive center is notified that you have completed it and that you are ready for the practical phase of the program. At the end of the eLearning program, you can print out your eRecord and bring a copy of it with you to your selected PADI Retailer or Resort.

I stopped then because the next selection was "buy now."

Who did you talk to at PADI who told you this isn't available? I'd call them back. :blinking:

I hope this helps,
kari

I am going to begin my DM course/Internship this Fall and as I am sure all of you are aware of how daunting of a task it can be in choosing a dive center for the training that not only has high standards but is comprehensive in nature and fits ones personality. You see, I plan going on to the various PADI Instructor levels when I complete my DM course therefore I want to finish a confident and qualified divemaster. That being said what questions should one ask before deciding on an a place of training prior to committing to them. Also, if I am not mistaken, PADI has changed up the Divemaster Crew pack for 2011 and I am giong to pruchase mine to self-study before starting my DM course to get ahead of the game and to better prepare myself. Would anyone out there have any suggestion as to where I can purchase my crew pack.
I greatly appreiate your time and assistance.

Please note that this thread is originally from Jan of 2010, revived in July of 2010 and now again last month, Jan of 2011. Things change, progress is made.

Last year, portions of the IDC on-line were rolled out (essentially some of the academics) thus allowing for more discussion and water time during the IDC course. With the basic dive theory modules already available on-line for the IDC or for review, this year e-learning portions of the DM course were also rolled out.

DM materials are evolving so get with your instructor to verify you have the latest versions of the required training materials when you start your training.

Kari,

I posted this in Jan 2010 and it was absolutely correct at the time of posting. Yes now DM course is available for $200 but it wasn't a year ago.

I see that. What a waste of a long and wonderfully informative post on my part! Check the dates, Kari! :)

Nah, it is ok :) someone else will read this thread and now know one can do DM theory online :)

In a what way? I started in 2010, do I have to worry about something here?

Does anyone know the percentage breakdown for written testing of the DM program such as how much is from the DM Manual vs the Encyclopedia of Diving? I am surprised the crew pack does not come with the video that is required for the course.

Ms E?
