Sorry perhaps I am confused here. IDC is part of DM course? And I can take IDC online?

parts of the idc are supposed to go on-line this year, so I've heard repeatedly. But I'm not sure how much of the idc one can complete on-line.

I can't find online course for DM on PADI site. Link?

It is not likely that PADI will link any professional courses or other pro level information to the basic web site. There is a Promember web site that is password protected and there are also web based courses (like Nitrox, and basic Open Water Diver) that are also password protected. Therefore you have to enroll in a course and PAY for the use of these sites, unless you have an unscrupulous friend with access that is bold enough to give you a password and risk their professional membership. The promember site is seporate from any of the web based courses as well.

Futhermore, the IDC is the Instructor Canidate course which is the next step after Divemaster before you receive you Instructor certification. Some of the material/knowledge is necessary to pass the Divemaster course, but the IDC is still the next step for you after Divemaster.

The progression is still Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue, Divemaster, Assistant Instructor (if not rolled into your instructor course) and then Instructor.

Don't worry about IDC right now.

Don't forget to get the Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving, great reference for the Physics and Physiology.

I've always found it a rather poor resource for those subjects.

When talking about detailed and complete references, Wienke's books are much better in my view for physics and the book Diving Physiology in Plain English is easily the best book on physiology out there.

For a solid text to discuss both together, the NOAA manual is a far superior reference.

I already have DM candidates who are takingg the theory part of the DM course online.

Since people say this is not possible...

Where does one sign to take the theory part of the DM course online? If you can't I am calling your bluff here! I called PADI and they said they do not have DM course online.

I start my DM course the end of April so I guess I should get the materials and start reading.

The PADI DM course and and IDC willl have components placed online eventually. I imagine canidates will have to sit some sort of exam at the dive school they choose to attend to make sure it was really them doing the exams, just as per the OW and EANx courses at the moment.

I imagine the Diving Knowledge Workbook for DM/IDC and the IDC Instructor Candidate Workbook will make ideal candiadates for online learning.

PADI standards, as mentioned above, now require the DM to have to full instructor manual. The instructor manual is being slimmed down (a LOT) to include only standards for courses and it's the size of a log book (and indeed fits into a log book binder). A separate publication with teaching guidelines will cover the tips and recommendations which are currently in the instructor manual. This makes the whole thing portable. 2009 Edition manuals are still being shipped though, however these will remain valid for most of this year.

Renewing PADI pros will no longer receive a current CD-ROM manual when they get their first quarterly update. Instead, the instructor manual will be available for download from the PADI Pro section of the website. It's not available yet. My area rep didn't have the full details when I saw him last week but he said it would "be only a few Megabytes".

For Info, the Encyclopaedia is required material for the PADI professional courses, and I will have to disagree with Kingpatzer above, it is an excellent resource for theory subjects, goes well beyond the basic requirements of the DM course and indeed should be in the posession of all recreational diving professionals, regardless of their agency affiliation.

Hope that helps a bit,

C.

Okay, this is my confused look. I went to the 5 star shop here and asked for DM Crewpack and they said that they didn't have the crewpack but they would give me everything in the CP for the price of the CP. No hologram and no Diving Knowledge Workbook. WHat is supposed to be there?

My advise, don't let them patch together a crew pack for you. If they don't have one, go somewhere else or have them order one. I have seen candidates get nickled & dimed for missing add-ons or out-of-date materials.

True. The DM crewpack now includes the instructors manual which has a decal. This decal will be required to be affixed on all DM applications submitted after July 1st. Having the complete instructors' manual will allow DMs to be familiar with the standards of all classes they will be supporting, not just the DM-led programs.

The instructor's crewpack will no longer include the instructor's manual, but will contain the specialty instructor's manual instead.

I have a follow up question for you. This was over a year ago, but I did end up getting the full 2010 pack with the instructors manual. Unfortunately, some knee problems ending up derailing my 2010 dive master plans. Now, I've gone and committed the lions share of my 2011 dive money to some actual diving. So the question is... does this 2010 crew pack have a scheduled expiration date? I'm trying to decide if it will be worthless when I finally get around to taking the course? If so I'll maybe sell it to someone taking it now and then buy a newer one when I need it. If I have a couple years though, then that will do.

Thanks
