The biggest thing of importance is thorough rinsing. As we say in the OR, the solution to pollution is dilution! What encourages bacterial growth is the urea in urine, and if you run copious amounts of clean water through the tubing and valve, you will remove most of that. I then put a little isopropyl alcohol into the tubing and shut the valve, so it sits there for a while.

Vinegar is not necessarily a very good disinfectant, as urinary tract bacteria tend to be tolerant of low pHs.
 
Thanks, everyone. Since the valve is removable, I decided to give it a good soak in dilute water / bleach after each use.
