I don't understand the anti-STA school. It makes total sense to me to use a STA. It secures the wing solidly to the BP, it makes the tank rock solid, it can add needed weight if you use a heavy STA or if you use a light weight like the DiveRite single piece that I prerfer it adds hardly any weight or stack up. As you can see in the photo the DiveRite STA snuggles down perfectly into the Mach V 30 pound wing.

If you consider that $80 piece is about $3 of metal and probably less than 5 minutes of fab time in a shop(and don't forget the sticker(s))...I think there's a question about the "value" proposition of something that isn't "required" ... at least to me...but I really don't know...that's why I asked and am getting excellent answers....from all of you...

THANKS

If I don't need a STA to secure the wing solidly to the BP and make the tank rock solid then I'd rather not have it. If I need more weight I'd like some flexibility to add it where I want to add it. Its OK with me if you choose something different.

Because--the tank will not be as solid as with an STA, it did not cost 80 dollars, I did modify mine to drop the top bands and I have done this mod for a few people, they are overpriced in relative proportion to all scuba gear (being way over priced for rubber and plastic). Example, An Apecks regulator is probably only a few bucks worth of plastic squirted into an injection mold and then sold for hundreds of dollars and the wings we are discussing are a few yards of cordura and a plastic bag.

LOL, it is OK with me if you use a wobbly, non STA set up ;).

Please expand......

also, I was just quoting a price on the DiveRite I found quickly (found $60 - 80) ... any alternative brands/prices/suppliers?

Well, on my flat plate (jetharness) and on my friend's DSS set up, the tank is not "wobbly" at all without a STA. Some set ups need a STA, some set ups benefit from one but will sort of work without, and some are designed to work well without. Also, in some situations the added weight is a benefit, in others it's a detriment. What's the big deal?

The STA was originally used (as far as I know) to adapt BP/W set ups that were designed for double tank use. Now there are some wing manufacturers that specifically design wings for single tanks that are intended to not use the STA. Saying "it's better to use a STA" in all cases doesn't make any sense.

I don't like my tank worn up behind my head as is common practice today. I added a second set of top slots to allow me to drop the tank lower--no big deal. If you don't use a STA it may not be a problem to begin with. I position my tank in accordance with the scuba bible, The New Science of Skin and Scuba Diving copywrite 1968 ;)

Think backplates are new huh---here is one from much earlier:

If you think you don't need a STA then certainly give it a try without and maybe it will work out for you. If not you can always add one.

Viva la Mach V

You've got to be kidding. I've tried the Mach V with STA. I've tried the DSS Torus without (on a DSS plate). Sorry, but there's no difference in "wobble factor". Have you dived DSS?
