Sort of relevant....

I was lobster diving off Thatchers Island 9 September and ran into one of those very old and huge lobsters up close and personal. The claws were easily as large as catchers mits. There was no way I was messing with it!!! I just watched for a while and then cursed myself for not having my Nikonos. Even with the magnification it must have been over 20 lbs.

Any similar encounters out there?

You mean like this big fella.

Taken at the Nubble in York Beach Maine. Also in the 20-30 lb department.

I remember reading that a lobster with a temp of 40 50 60 degrees being handled by a 98 degree human hand burns the shell . Kinda like sticking your hand in a 212 degree pot of water. :11:

Where did you read that? The temp of the lobster's shell (whether it's 40degress or 70degress) does not affect at what temp it will burn.

I'm not questioning you but....

1. Have you considered just how many lobsters that the commercial lobstermen handle and throw back in a given week? If that info was correct, the population would be decimated within a couple of years.

2. Have you ever looked at the lobsters at the supermarket? Their shells don't look burned to me and they were handled at least 3 days prior yet still are very much alive.

I did not say it kills them, It however burns them. Plus You should ignore me on this thread. I'm pissed because I have gout and cant eat shell fish anymore , jealous because most on this thread can and angry cuz whoever started this thread has me dieing for a big fat chick smothered in butter. ???? Hey Does anyone have a chunky sister.

Bummer about no more shellfish.....that sucks. Time to carry an epi-pen in case someone sneaks some into a meal?

It doesn't burn them, you need to report wherever you read that to snoops.com - total urban legend.

Thanks John, I wish it were the other way around and it was legend that shellfish didnt promote gout. All these years trying to lessen the amount of discomfort to the little buggers by just useing my finger tips.

Ya, shellfish is a no no with gout, along with alcohol..... That said, I know some people with gout that will sneak in some lobster from time to time in small ammounts.
