I agree with Boogie, it's worth saying again and again. Several times I have heard of divers dying in the ER or sustaining permanent disabilities because out of ignorance, they were treated for something else (stroke, etc.) instead of being rushed to a chamber.

I agree that supporting dan is a great idea. Everyone has put forward that dan can organise chamber rides, and make arrangements to get you there.

But from reading the site, that's what I understand the travel assist is for. Getting you to a chamber quickly and paying for the ride. However, if I'm closer to home than 50 miles (80k) they're not going to arrange that are they or pay for it? This was why I wondered if DAN membership was worthwhile to me.

I'll join Dan just so that I have access to the dive doc in cases of emergency, but will they pay for the chamber ride, or transport to the chamber if I'm diving locally rather than on holiday.

Thanks for the helpful replies.

Always learning.

J.

There is a fantastic article in the latest SCUBA Diving magazine about the pro's and con's of DAN, what you get when you sign up and what you don't get if you exceed certain diving limits.

It compares DAN to PADI Diver Protection, Divesafe, Dive Assure and Divers Security Insurance. Definately worth reading if you are unsure about the level of coverage that you have or if you are thinking about joining.

Just for the record, this whole 50 mile thing was discussed in a different thread. Yes, Travel Assist is only good for outside of 50 miles... But Travel Assist is just that - Travel Insurance.

BUT - the medical insurance/dive insurance/paying for the chamber and helicopter insurance (IE - the DAN Master/Preferred etc) is good from your living room, if you needed it. That's not related to TravelAssist.

So, yes, join DAN and get the Insurance. They'll put you in the chopper, chamber you, look after you... well worth it.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply to my original question. I now have a much better idea of what the different insurances are

I will be getting a family membership of DAN in the next few days, and insurance for both of us.

Once again, thanks for you time.

Justin.

As for your equipment, try Depp Insurance. As a citizen of any country, they'll cover everything from your scuba kit to your camera anywhere in the world.

Freeflyer:
I've just been going through the DAN site, to look at membership benefits. Seems to me that over here in Asia there's not much reason to join.

I can't get equipment insurance, because that's for US residents only. The emergency cover only seems to be for when you're further from home than 50 miles. Brunei is not much more than that long, so it would only work when I go on holiday, not for regular weekend diving.

Am I missing something, or are most DAN members in the US. If not, what do international members gain.

This is not a flame but a genuine question, I wanted to join, but don't see there being much value.

Thanks,

J.

Check out DEPP (Diver equipment protection) program it is international and rates are very good this is for equipment protection
