I usually clip their tail first. Even though there are no spines on the tail it helps to impede their ability to move when you do start clipping their spines.

Sorry about your injury, but I have learned from this to snip spine. My Bekki and I wer slaughtering lionfish just end of June, but there seems to be no end to them!
