Here in the silty quarries of the Midwest we call them "Tillers" or "Dirt Darts" or even "Mud Wrestlers" when they are particularly bad. :no

My personal favorite is "The Spaz" who flails about with reckless abandon on their first pool session. Same person usually does the crappie flop on the bottom the first time they find themselves there. I've seen this maneuver done on a reef too.:(

"BB'ers" . . .("Bagoong for Brains", in the Filipino Vernacular). As in the PPD has a lot of BB'ers . . .

I guess one's doesn't necessarily have to be a noob to be a hoover, but it often goes hand in hand.

BTW, "NOOB" definitely predates the internet age, except of course we were so un-kewl and spelled it out fully "newbie". The other term on the BBS systems circa 1984-88 was "ruggie", as in "rugrat". Anybody with a handle such as "Ninjasbane" (I don't know how that came back to me so fast) was generally perceived as a "ruggie". Or anyone who typed in ALL CAPS.

I think one of the other issues here is that people are too afraid of hurting someone's feelings. If someone sucks, they suck. No way around it. Instead of coddling them, telling them that they're the best thing since sliced bread, tell them that they suck. Don't lie to them about it; that's the worst thing to do. They should accept that they suck and try to better themselves. All these terms for "stroke" are basically just saying that someone sucks at diving, and they're most likely a potential hazard to themselves or others.

And the word for someone who walks up to you and tells you that you suck is a-hxxx.
I man c'mon now, Spart. Do you think this is really a good idea?:shakehead

Two I liked were:

MUPPETs – Mentally Unstable People PADI Eventually Train

and

SPOREs – Stupid People On Rental Equipment

I don't remember "rugrat," but I do however remember "k-rats" which may be the same. Man, the BBS days were awesome. Thats pretty much the thing that got me all hooked on computers. ;)

Personally, I believe anyone that uses such derogatory terms is just an insensitive clod with no self-confidence or self-esteem or understanding of real dive camaraderie, but I don't want to be judgmental...HA!

It's exactly that kind of behavior that is going to cause someone to get too nervous and have some kind of incident.

I think people that need to make fun of others as being particularly unwelcome, and I'll be the first to start calling that person (making comments about others) "Jacques Cousteau" or execute some other comedic thing at their expense....

We all need to remember that we were all new divers once, and that everyone out there diving is learning something more about diving every day.
