Mr.X:
Interestingly enough I have yet to see a dive professional say that someone "sucks". The choice of vocabulary would also vary with familiarity. If anything, the tact that you mentioned needs to be employed and typically (as a dive professional) some post-dive counseling in lieu of videotape feedback. A principle of learning - immediacy and acessibility.
The degree of familiarity is definitely important for word choice.
One of the most influential people in my life was a retired USMC MSgt. He told it like it is, good or bad. Sometimes that comes out a bit in my communication with other people. ;)

Same here. I have a buddy who is a grizzled, retired USMC vet. and police trainer. He often doesn't say anything. He just slaps me into place! :D

Non-verbal communication is often quite effective with those who can understand it!

"Stroke," as I understand it, isn't someone that's bad at diving. Hell, I'm still bad at diving. A "stroke" is a know-it-all who sucks at diving, and refuses to listen to anyone, no matter how well-intentioned their advice and guidance may be.

This is correct - also, the word "stroke" as applied to cave divers has been in use since the 1960's. The word became to be used by "DIR wanna-bes" after George Irvine used it extensively in his internet tirades in the 1990's, he learned it from Parker Turner.

Actually, "stroke" as I have heard it used refers to a diver who doesn't follow equipment guidelines and procedures outlined by one particular version of what is "right." In such cases, it is easy for me to determine which divers on the boat or at the site I should pay no heed to whatsoever. I have no patience for such utter nonsense.

On a recent private charter, a smart ***** called a friend of mine, Mike a 6’5” 275lb shot-putter, a stroke. He apologized shortly after he found himself dangling from Mikes massive right hand over the side of the boat, gear and all. Mike is a stroke however, I just never tell him. I hope he doesn’t read this.

It never matters what you said, all that matters is what people think you said.

Too late. I already mutter "woot" jumping off the boat and several times during the dive :D

As for a 'Zerg' of divers, well...we've come pretty close.
