I wasn't aware that noob was meant to be derogatory. Around here it simply signifies someone who's new to diving. I've never heard it used in a way that was intended to be demeaning ...

... Bob (Grateful Diver)
Often you hear the word "effin" in front of it Bob.

I think one of the other issues here is that people are too afraid of hurting someone's feelings. If someone sucks, they suck. No way around it. Instead of coddling them, telling them that they're the best thing since sliced bread, tell them that they suck. Don't lie to them about it; that's the worst thing to do. They should accept that they suck and try to better themselves. All these terms for "stroke" are basically just saying that someone sucks at diving, and they're most likely a potential hazard to themselves or others.

If someone tells you that you suck at diving, or calls you a stroke (or whatever else), ask them why they say it instead of refuting it immediately or calling foul. If it's a valid concern, try and fix it. Many times, divers don't know what they're doing unless they see it on video. They'll deny it like you wouldn't believe, until they watch themselves do it.

"You stir up the bottom!"
"No I don't, I never stir up the bottom."
"...ever looked behind you?"

I understand that PC has gone a little far, but walking up to someone and saying "You Suck at diving" is usually someone looking to fight. Be nice when you tell someone they suck, and name calling isn't it. You can do it on a webpage and get away with it, but on the bank it could get you a bloody nose.

Never said that when telling someone they suck, you had to be a jackass about it.
This is where tact comes into play. :)

Or, preferably, get some video of them and let them critique themselves. That way they're not just taking your word for it; they're actually seeing it.

It's a blockage of blood flow to the brain, sometimes cause by an actual block in the blood vessel, sometimes by a rupture of the blood vessel.

:rofl3: :rofl3:

I'll take it a tad further... :D

A TIA (Transiet Ischemic Accident)... from lack of oxygen to the brain tissues (block in a blood vessel)

A CVA (Cerebro-Vascular Accident)... can be ischemic (see above) or hemmhoragic (also see above--- rupture of a blood vessel) :D

:D :D :D :D :D

Interestingly enough I have yet to see a dive professional say that someone "sucks". The choice of vocabulary would also vary with familiarity. If anything, the tact that you mentioned needs to be employed and typically (as a dive professional) some post-dive counseling in lieu of videotape feedback. A principle of learning - immediacy and acessibility.

I've used videotape many times. I've seen divers just as bad as they were after viewing the tape (no training offered or used by the diver) . If there is a strategy it's to get them to the point where they want to change their diving practices enough to take constructive criticism and enact change. Easy with some, difficult with others.

I will say this though...having had dangerous divers risk the safety of my students, or others I am more than happy to let others know that their diving practices endangered others. I've had student shot at with spearguns, bumped and shoved on wrecks, kicked in the face, given post-dive cigarettes etc.

ZOMG! The dive was totally FTL. You pulled aggro on that shark! gg lrn2dive, n00b.

It scares me sometimes that I have brain cells devoted to remembering this stuff rather than more important things...
