Anyone dive the Blue Lake/Capt. Johns in Oronogo on a regular basis??

I've been down there twice in the last month, and I haven't quite made up my mind on how much I like it. The vis has been pretty bad (10-15'), and it's not very much fun gearing up there. Last time I went it was 98 degrees outside with no shade, and I just about died getting into my drysuit and down to the water.

The neatest things there are the cavern openings (which appear to be HUGE in low visibility) at about 80'. The rest of the stuff is the usually quarry crap, though the SS Budweiser is an interesting "wreck." You also might run into a few carp.

The place seems to be cursed too. I've only had five dives there, and I've had 3 burst o-rings (all on surface), a computer crap out at 90', and the strap break on the bottom timer I used to replace the computer. My dad and I theorized that the o-rings breaking were a result of Capt. John cranking down the compressor too hard. Oh well...

Hi Nick.... well sounds like you have had your time at the pond--wow. Thanks for the insight,,,it does help to be better prepared.

Yeah, Blue Water Lake seems to be well suited for technical divers as there have been several there each time I've gone. For me, while I'm still in Kansas, I'll just spend the extra hour driving to Beaver Lake where there is better recreational diving.

texdiveguy,

Give me a shout if you're going to head to Oronogo. I'd be interested. I've relocated to Oklahoma recently so I'll be hanging out in the Midwest Muck Divers forum for a while. Oronogo is a couple of hours from me (Tulsa).

Yeh, since I couldn't get anyone to dive this weekend, I spent some of time researching. I haven't gotten my feet wet in OK yet. I've been diving everywhere else but here. Hehe.

I'd like to check out the following:

Tenkiller (OK)
Oronogo (MO)
Ouachita (AR)
LakeNorrell (AR)
Beaver Lake (AR)
Norfolk Lake (AR)
Greers Ferry Lake (AR)
Beaver Lake (MO)
Table Rock (MO)

I'm interested in scouting out these lakes while on the trips so I can get a layout of the area. I'd like to use some of the deeper lakes for rebreather practice next year. :D

I've been actively studying the technology for several months in preparation for official training early next year. The plan is to get an order for a Megalodon in the que before DEMA and aquire it in March/April. The anticipated release of new electronics though has expectations (delivery and performance) in a whirlwind at the moment.
