A friend of mine is looking to get her open water certification. I know of several places north of town in Sanford and Lake Mary, but she prefers something closer to the Orlando city center. Any good shops in the area that offer classes?

Thanks!

Have her look around for an independent instructor in the area. BTW, does she realize no matter where the shop/instructor is located, she will still have to travel outside of Orlando to finish her certification?

YEP!

download google earth and then type in dive shops, other than their locations, it will usually give you a website, and phone number.

Dayo Scuba - Orlando Florida - Open Water, Cavern, Cave and Technical Scuba Training and Diving - Main Page

Tom Johnson runs Dayo Scuba. He is in Orlando and is a full time instructor, not a shop. And, he provides the gear. No pressure to buy anything. He will meet the student's schedule. TJ trained my daughter three years ago. All dives were fresh water, and not far from home.

We consider him a family friend. Give him a call and say Stu and Ellen sent you.

Out of the Orlando instructors I've met, I would recommend TJ as well. Very nice guy and he really looks after his students (allows them to come on dives in the future, gives REALLY good deals on gear, etc)

My wife met TJ before I did. The Mrs. knows nothing about diving. But, when the new diver is your 16 year old girl, Mom knows what to look for. He is a professional and a gentleman.

I would also reccommend TJ... Not only the best instructor ever but also good pricing. Head over to dayoscuba.com.
