Ummm SCUBAGUY- you musta missed the memo- couple of weeks ago the decision was made to give the Oriskany to FL, and she is coming to Pensacola.

You're right, I "spoke" without double checking my sources...The error has been corrected... :crafty:

The Original Florida Proposal has the ship being dropped at:

30 02' 38" N
87 00' 25" W

A map is attached.

I'll be there when she goes down, and dive her as soon as we are allowed. They better attach some mooring buoys, 'cause I only have 300' of anchor line.

Anyone know where they are sinking the Oriskiny?

This will be an awesome dive for many years to come I am sure. Anyhow, I would like to set up a huge group dive for when they finally do get this sunk and open to dive. CAN'T WAIT !!!!!!

Well, if it's going to P'cola, thats better than Georgia.
My son will be stationed at Pensacola for about a year with Marines in Pilot/Navigator training. Darn, that would be terrible to visit him and get to dive too.

Looks like 50 feet to the superstructure and 100 feet to the flight deck. I see the picture now.....Standing at attention on the flight deck - CLICK !!

According to the May issue of Dive Training, they are indeed considering a 1086' Forrestal class aircraft carrier being given away this year for use as an artificial reef. The mag did not get anymore specific than its size and its class - perhaps thats enough to be able to track the name of this vessel.

There are 2 other former carriers being considered as artificial reefs as well, not including the 1086' carrier. These other two ships are larger than the Oriskany and smaller than the 1086' carrier.

I live in south Alabama(just north of Gulf Shores) and Pensacola is less than 30min from me(about an hour to the beach) so I'm rather glad the Oriskany is being sunk this close to me. It'll save me the driving time, because you can bet your fins that I would have driven to Texas for it. Once you guys pick up a carrier, I will still be willing to make the drive :)

Edit - Did a little looking around, the USS Independence fits the description and it was retired in 1998. Course, you could be getting the USS Forrestal itself.

This could be yours? Impressive.

I know the Constellation is one of them. That sucks for her since she was just decommisioned last August.

I'm pretty sure the Saratoga is another one. She's currently in Rhode Island.

The third is either the Ranger or Independence. Probably Ranger, she's been rotting at her moorings longer.
