Eric,

The dive shop you elude to would be the Bamboo Reef. It was founded around the early 1960s by Al Giddings and Leroy French, but was sold to an eastern transplant many years ago.

The "Eastern Transplant" is Sal Zammitti still diving and mentoring others. A great guy. He has a long history of serving the Bay area Dive community. He has personally certified many divers. His daughter Karen currently manages Bamboo Reef. Sal is still there many days a week; servicing regulators and helping out.

update
Leroy French...from a knowledgeable friend :

The shop was closed and Leroy left the country without notice due to some legal issues he had.

Does not paying your bills count as a legal issue?

That is his name! I couldn't recall his name but I recall meeting him once or twice at early diving functions but can't recall him visually.

Sal came west with New England Divers (NED) as a store manager when they were on their national expansion program in the mid 1970s (+_ a few years). New England Divers established a dive shops at the four corners of the US and dive hot spots in between. In California there was a NED shop in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles and San Francisco. As I recall Sal was the manager of the San Francisco store.

I note you also have fond memories of Leroy French...He must have a "fan club" that would fill a foot ball stadium...All standing in line waiting for their $$$$$$

Ah! the days of our dives..
