I used a BP/W using the OW config (40 inch primary hose, under arm, backup on necklace) for every dive after my OW classes. I did advanced and rescue in the same config.
When my daughter learned, she was in a BP/W. The instructor had zero issues with this.
My PADI DM buddy even started pseudo-copying us. He now wears his "octo" on a necklace which is still PADI compliant and yet he has better awareness of where his octo is and it cleans up his hose routing.
