Well sports fans, the ice is still down and 8" thick in some places. The good news is that it seems pretty porous and slushy on top. The air temps were in the 60's, so it won't be long now until we can start kicking up the silt. :)

Vis was worse today- I suspect that the recent rains and melting are causing run off to stir up the quarry. We did see many more fish today, although this was the first dive on the shallow side, so they might have been there all along. I also noticed a little more snail activity. Despite the warmer air temps, I managed to get some brain freeze on the first dive.

We passed the surface interval literally on the surface- we walked on the ice since it was thick enough to support weight- we were able to walk down the driveway, over the truck, then out to the deep hole, and then returned over the flamingo. It was a short walk, but it would be a long dive.

Water temps were right around 40f and vis was down to about 30'. Everyone will be relieved that the port-a-potty has thawed out. ;)

The ice is almost gone in Hoosier land this weekend. I dove yesterday and it was a partial ice diving. It looks like two weeks interval from KY to Chicago. I was told that the ice was gone at Joe's, KY last weekend and is gone in IN this weekend.

So you are diving in ice conditoins while I'm snowboarding in a t-shirt. . . Seems like the extremes!

So I hope open-wtaer comes soon, cuz I am so compressed air deprieved that I dont know what I will do if I cant start diving soon.

Today though, I did some major snowboarding at Alpine Valley with 50" of snow, 60* temps, and plenty of sunshine. . . Shed most layers of clothes but forgot that i was in the sun for 6 hours, I am burnt like I was outside in July!

Keep us posted though guys . . . If the ice is gone, I woudln't mind jumping in for a dive or two next Saturday (3/18).

Later,
Mike

With the warm weather we are having and the predicted rain this week, I'll be that all the ice is gone from the quarry this weekend.
