Any suggestions for places that I can get my openwater done in Cancun at the end of Feb? I am an SSI student.

My recommendation is to finish it here, in the states, if at all possible. My reasoning is this... I wouldn't want to waste any of my 'diving time' doing my open water check out dives. I would rather dive for 'me' and enjoy all that the ocean has to offer there.

I have heard people that 'referred out' (started their class at home and finished on vacation) say that they wish they had finished their class at home so that they could have spent all their time playing on vacation. I am sure that there are many people that have finished their open water on vacation and thought it worth it too.

Just my 2-cents...

Send a PM to cancun mark. If he can't do your certification, he probably knows who you need to contact.

I agree with Ann Marie's comments if you can follow her advice.

There's another reason, IMO. If you do your cert dives in the Caribbean, then you've got a pretty narrow comfort zone. It's too easy. If you do them under less ideal conditions, then you'll be more at ease when you get to your "real" dives, and you'll be better prepared for it if you should decide to take yourself diving somewhere more challenging.

Oh I wish I could do my check out here in the states, but working a job with no weekends off, its cold in TN right now, I just dont have any available time I can go to the beach before I go on my trip next month. I just wish I could do my openwater somewhere right now near TN and get it over with...

I don't know of any dive shops in Cancun to recommend, sorry. check with your instructor or dive shop they may know someone down there.
a lot of people are getting their certs. on vacation, it does cost extra above what you've already paid, but hey there's nothing wrong with being able to enjoy your final dives as a student.
I was one of the lucky ones that got certified in the service and on a tropical island so I didn't have any pool work at all, my whole schooling was in the ocean. I guess that's why I don't do much lake diving at all, BORING!!! sure, I do it every now and again, just to get wet, but...BORING!!!
If your instructor or dive shop can't recommend someone contact SSI, they should be able to direct you to a dive shop they are associated with that will do it.
after this trip, check out Cozumel next
enjoy your trip and first dives, welcome to the bortherhood!!!

I think my instructor is gonna hook me up with someone very close to where we are staying, I just have to get him the dates.

Sharky- I have to agree with you, I think its neat to get my finals done in the ocean and not a rock quarry, even though its going to cost more.

OK just wanted to update this thread for anyone who maybe searching. I got my openwater checks done!! I am so happy to have that out of the way. But I wanted to give the info of where I did it. I highly reccomend Scuba Cancun. http://scubacancun.com.mx/ My instructor at Scuba Cancun was Francisco and I found him to be very good and understanding. Very safety minded, but also wanted us to have alot of fun which we did. The dive boats they had were nice and comfortable.
I already have my own reg, dive skin, mask, fins, and snorkel so all I needed was a bc, weights, and my air tank. The stuff i rented from them was in great shape did not look like typical rental stuff. A few people had to rent everything and it appeared the regs were in good shape and did not look abused. Most regs seemed to be Mares.

So anyone looking to do their check outs in Cancun I really liked this dive center. They are located in a nice white 2 level building on the lagoon side near the bridge on Kukulcán blvd. Km 5 Hotel Zone. Just tell the taxi driver or bus driver you want to get off at Playa Lagoosta.

Getting these dives done in a real atmosphere instead of a rock quarry was the best thing in my opinion. I think if you have the time to do it then go fo it at the beach!

I want to add this final thought. Dont have anything to do with Aquaworld, they are like the Wal-mart or McDonalds of dive centers.
