Personally, I recommend taking your checkout dives at home, so you can enjoy the diving you do on vacation without having a set of objectives you need to accomplish. Besides, you might find there's diving near home that you actually like.
Yeah I did my check out dives on vacation and really wish I would have done them before vacation.

Open water checkout in 2 weeks, cant wait )

I picked up a BP/W from DSS, Im just waiting for the LDS to get it in.

Piecing it all together )

Im considering getting Apeks regs, either XTX50/100/200 with DS4 if I get the 50, if 100/200 may stick with stock. Im also eyeing the Legend LX Supreme (supreme just cuz I hate the gold)

Ive seen some people mentioning the ATX50 but is the newer not as good as the old?

I just got back from my OW checkout @ Lake Stockton so now I am certified!

Naturally I still have some things to work on, Im not bouncing from bottom to surface but my buoyancy could still use some work... and I gotta quit kicking everyone. Other than that now I just need to pick up some more gear and find some of you other divers.

Woohoo!

I'm completing my open water certification this weekend at Beaver Lake. I'm a solo diver, and I'll be looking for dive buddies myself. I'm also checking out the various dive clubs in the city (every shop has a club of some sort, and there are also clubs that are not tied to a specific shop). I'll be happy to share my findings.

I'll dive with you guys. I'm hoping I get over my prostate infection so I can dive this coming weekend. I'm wanting to dive Table Rock Lake Saturday and Sunday but for now I feel like I have died in my sleep and woke up in the middle of it, this is not fun. If I'm good to go I do intend on diving TR this weekend, keeping my fingers crossed and taking my meds like a good boy...

Did you do your check out dives with Midwest?

No I ended up going with Diver's Equipment and Repair in MO. I visited 4-5 shops in the area and this one gave the best impression IMHO. I did a bit of research on the board and decided to go toward a plate and wing, most of the shops were friendly but tried to steer me toward what they had on the rack. I mentioned that I had been looking at the DSS rigs and they were comparing it with the OMS stuff they usually get. A few days later I get a call and they had contacted DSS to see what they could work out on what I was looking at and for a small markup I was able to order my DSS rig through them which I happily did. I expect to take continuing education in various places though.

I am off to Hawaii in Mid-June afterwards Ill be looking for a reg set and probabaly a computer although I wouldnt mind diving tables for a little while first. If anyone has anything coming up afterwards that wouldnt mind having me along jus lemme know!

Hey NAUI what classes do you teach and where?

I'm currently working on my SSI Dive Control Specialist aka Dive Master/Assistant Instr. with Midwest Aquatics. I also teach swimming lessons, a Ranger Leader (at MWA) and I am an Instructor Trainer for Seasigns.

Midnite135,
Congrats on the certification! Good decision in checking around shops and finding one that worked best with you. You have to do that because there are good and bad out there just like in every avenue of business/life. Sounds like you found a good one. Hope you have a great trip to Hawaii. I dove there a year or so ago, and got 14 dives in over 6 days, man was I tired when we were done! I did my diving through Island Divers on Oahu and they were fantastic. Dove most all of the big sites there (The Corsair, The Sea Tiger, Turtle Cove etc). It was pretty great. You asked about good sites for scuba info, you might check out www.lakediver.com there is a lot of information there, including a dive site locater. We are diving all the time in your area (Table Rock, Beaver, Ouachita) maybe you can hook up with us next time we head out that way. Let me know what you think of the site and if it is helpful!

Thanks for the site link and the invite, ill be sure to check that out and get in touch with ya.
