The Investigators (a forensics/detective show) has an episode about the real life case that inspired the movie "Open Water".

Here is the synopsis:

Deep Secrets

A young Louisiana couple plans a vacation of a lifetime to dive the Great Barrier Reef in Australia but the scuba excursion soon becomes their worst nightmare. When the tour boat returns from the diving trip, the crew realizes that the couple didn’t come back and may still be in the shark-infested waters. Bizarre clues question whether they were really left at sea or could there be another reason for their disappearance?

It seems like they're going for the whole "did they fake their own death" thing, but they also mentioned great whites as another alternative.

Hop Devil:
Wow,
Great whites would not be a fun alternative. Was that case ever resolved?

Prevailing theory is that it had nothing to do with sharks.

Slate found later certainly indicates that they survived the night, and none of the recovered gear shows any signs of a violent end.

Dehydration was the most likely culprut.
