Hi is it dangerous to open eyes during mask drill in cold water(4-8°C). Have heard that there is a risk of eye-injury, but cant find helpful information.
Thanks in advance, batdiver

I'm no ophthalmologist, but so far my eyesight is perfect. Maybe ice crystals could become a problem if you're ice diving.

Yeah. It's not enormously pleasant always, but it's not dangerous either.

It’s certainly painful at least me for me

While it may not be dangerous, mask drills in cold water is easily my absolute LEAST favorite part of cold water training! I did it many times in quarries and lakes in the US upper Midwest during my advanced training. Man does it SUCK!!! HATE IT!

But opening my eyes in cold water, I never had an issue doing that and I even wear contact lenses. I just always had to make sure to only open them a small bit, not fully open, for fear of losing a lens.

Still, I would have sworn that my lenses were freezing onto my eyeballs. 😄

After trying my one hand mask drills for cavern course, I don't like the cold in the sinuses more than in my eyes. like, the shock of cold water on my forehead is just painful, my eyes didn't have the chance to start hurting.
