I'm not sure what that link is about . . . You get the idea of rules and restrictions from reading the DIR forum?

DIR actually DOES have a lot of rules and restrictions. Compared with the wide world of scuba gear out there, your choices are limited. Compared with the wide range of choices of gases and depths, your choices are limited. Solo diving is not an option. Although I'm certainly a very new diver, it seems to me as though most of the restrictions have been made with thought and with a rationale behind them that makes sense. And none of them irk me.

And the rules -- Have a thorough dive plan which is communicated among the team; do a complete equipment check before diving; stay together and operate as a team; debrief the dive. Those don't irk me, either.

And the emphasis on high standards for skills and emergency procedures doesn't irk me, either.

DIR rules and restrictions are like a drysuit with two layers of undergarment in it. If you're comfortable in either, you hardly notice they're there.

Edited for spelling

Lynne, you are certainly on my top 5 QUALITY SB Posters list! Pretty darn good for a yearling!

TSandM:
It was a year ago today that I did my third and fourth OW cert dives, and became a certified diver.

LOL!

Peter, this train his hurling so fast down the tracks, no one and slow it down. Encouragement has no effect. Discouragement has no effect.

Good luck, buddy.

I completely agree with you that the system makes perfect sense. And neither does it irk me, I in fact find the high standards admirable. But to a lot of us who dive recreationally in very forgiving environments, such as the Philippine setting, some of the rules do become restrictive or more complicated - like a drysuit with 2 layers of undergarment in 84F water - you'll never get comfortable. When people say that's BS, that's what irks me.;)

Congrats on your first year, am looking forward to reading more of your insights.:D

LOL - like it would make any difference ... she's lost Peter... no hope for recovery ... best to just accept it and go diving ;) (once the lawn is mowed, car washed, horses ridden ...)

Aloha, Tim

well ... maybe with 2 layers it is a bit uncomfortable... then again I've never tried 2 layers in 84* water, 1 seems to be plenty :D
