I found an ad selling an aluminum U S Divers tank from '84. It is long out of any inspection.
Did these use the "bad" aluminum?
Will shops inspect and fill these, or is it best used as decoration?

Chances are it's 6351 alloy unless it was made by Catalina.

Don't pay more than $20 for it which is about what it's worth for scrap in case you can't use it.

That's what I thought. I had passed on it earlier when he had it priced higher and told him what the problem was with it.
He has since lowered the price, but it still isn't worth it.

If it has a nice decal it can be used as a display piece but thats it.
Not even worth scrapping in my area because they want them cut in half. More work than it's worth.

makes a nice bell if its really good condition. cut the bottom off and hook a ringer to the drop stem on the valve.

Yeah, my neighbors would just love that. Not.

It is worth only scrap metal price. The valve might be useful for a pony bottle.

I set two of them out by the curb last week for the junk guy that comes around my neighborhood to pick. I hope he isn't too upset when the scrap yard turns him down because they arent cut in half.
I don't feel bad though. I left some box fans out for him a while back and he busted the plastic parts out of them and left them laying on the curb and just took the metal frames. Now he gets to lug 60lbs of PITA tanks around for nothing. Serves him right.
