I dove for years without logging dives. We only used our cert cards to be able to refill our tanks. I started at 10 years old with dad and his instructor- although I usually snorkeled- I could stay in the water hours longer. I received my certification in '76 when I turned 18, mainly so I could get refills on my own and dive wherever I wanted without dad needing to be with me.
I recently started diving again after a long layoff- I was bored with muddy lakes back in the '80s.
