I am looking at buying a older style oasis reg and was wondering if it is compatible with nitrox up to 40% with no special servicing required, also wondered if the moisture retaining fins actually work. I have bad heartburn that I take medicine for daily and the dryness of compressed air really makes it act up and has made me sit out of dives before would like to remedy this problem

The reg will take the Nitrox.

As for the fins, they help a bit with dry mouth but might not help your problem.

There's something on the market call a biofilter that might help you more: Apollo Sports: Dive Gear: Regulators: Bio-Filter

Another alternative that might be worth looking into in your case might be to just take a plastic bottle full of water down with you and take a drink from it from time to time. On long dives I've occasionally used one that I made from a bottle for a sports drink by just attaching a clip to it so I could hang it on a D ring. Anything with a pull open tab on the top of it that you could put in your mouth and pull open with your teeth before drinking would work. Practice with it though. There's a bit of knack to drinking while under water.

.......another thought, there are a few 100% metal 2nd-stages out there (both Scubapro and Mares sell current 100% metal models now.......and both have sold such models for decades now....I've got an older Mares RUBY that's 100% metal).....this will certainly help reduce dry mouth. I tried the Apollo Bio Filter route on the RUBY and abandoned the filter....I was shocked at the reduction in air-flow the filter caused....I never even dove the filter.....just hooking the reg up to the tank on land and comparing the air-flow 'pre-filter' versus 'post-filter' was an eyeopener ! ...a good idea in theory, but......

I wish I could help you more, but I will offer this. I started diving with an Oasis in 1986, and upgraded to the newer version in around 1998 (smaller exhausts, primarily). Had the older one re-built with the next-gen exhausts and gave it to my son. I am not aware of any warnings or concerns about the regulator and its use with Nitrox, although I am not Nitrox certified (that's next). My wife also dives an Oasis that we bought in 2002, and she has one dive on Nitrox, and the divemaster we were with just hooked it up to the tank (which was a spare on the boat for him, and we had to use because of a dead straight air tank) without any question.

Sorry I couldn't offer more assistance.

I know there are people diving the Oasis on Nitrox without using the kit. However, the proper way to dive the Oasis on Nitrox is with the Nitrox Kit installed. We offer a kit with different o-rings that is to be used when diving Nitrox.

Also, in regards to the fins: yes they do work. Will it help you with your issue? I cannot answer.
