It is already hydro'd, it is from 1990 but i was wondering if 8" is a common diameter for a luxfer S80 or did I buy a weird one? Just curious.

You most likely have a 100 tank since those were 8 inch diameters.
Only way to verify it is for you to post several pictures of the entire neck stampings with all the numbers clearly visible to read.

Or a 90 did you have 90s over there in the 90s, I suppose there are ships and planes and things

Saw some people say that but my tank is stamped S80

I was born in 98 so I wouldn't know. I'm asking older divers who used to buy luxfer cylinders before they became metal impact. I also was just OW certified wednesday, so i'm very new

I think this is might be one of those oddball "Super 80" or "Neutral 80" tanks that aluminum tank manufacturers were experimenting with when larger steel tanks were first starting to become popular, partly because they did not get buoyant when empty.

Bump up the thickness of the walls to make the tank heavier and thus closer to neutral when empty.

Many of those oddball aluminum tanks were 3AL3300, however, which this one is not. Nothing wrong with it - go dive it!

Just a guess....

You can email Luxfer with the serial # and photos of the neck markings.

I had some weird second hand AL3000 that everyone balked at filling because all the markings were in some weird font and weird large size. My VIP guy buddy said no way he'd pass that, it's obviously fake markings. He posted the pic on his Visual inspector group and they all decided it was fake.

Luxfer emailed me back with the data on it. Seems it was born in Italy, DOT approved, and had made it's way back to the US, probably by some scuba diving service member stationed there.

After I showed them the email from Luxfer they all calmed down. It did look wierd though like it was marked by some stamps you buy at Lowes or Home Depot. The fact that my buddy gave it to me free and someone gave it to him free made me suspect but Luxfer said it was righteous.

Luxfers modern S80 has the following dimensions:
  • Height: 660 mm (26 in)
  • Outer diameter: 184 mm (7.25 in)
  • Weight: 14.2 Kg (31.4 Lbs)
  • Internal volume: 11.1 L (678 in3)
  • Air capacity: 2192 L (77.4 f3)
What you have there looks slightly different with regards to cylinder height 603 mm (23.75 in) and diameter 203 mm (8 in), but my records for their cylinders only go back to 1998, not up to 1990. In that time frame Luxfer produced the S12 (HOAL 3) for the UK and CEE market which very closely resembles your measurement. It had a cylinder height of 610 mm (24.02 in) and a diameter of 204 mm (8.03 in). But in contrast to the S80 with its 11.1 L (678 in3) it had an internal volume of 12.0 L (732 in3).

Your cylinder is undoubtedly an S80 as indicated by the stamping. My guess is that it was an earlier iteration which was shorter, but slightly fatter.
On a side-note, cylinder wall thickness is directly correlated to inside diameter. Seeing as your cylinder has a bigger diameter, I suspect that the wall thickness will be slightly more than the modern S80 of 12.5 mm (0.491 in). In total I would expect your cylinder to be slightly heavier due to the increase in wall thickness that the short and fat design will have called for.

Congratulations the news of your certification is wonderful, happy Wednesday, for next week, welcome

I just hope that when you find yourself on a quiz show that you are able to
come up with an alternative statement, when faced with a history question

Quite intriguing, I would like to see a photo of your tape measure with your tank standing on top of it
