Hey Gang,

Merry Christmas All!

I have a "personal" question for you.

When it rains here on the coast, how long do you stay out of the water? Back home we stay out for at least a day. I hear it's 3 days here due to bacteria levels and run off etc. What do YOU do?

dive safe,

Hi Jeff,

where you been hiding? We've had this decussion right after the first rain & had a lot of different opinions. Some said 3 days some said look at the water & if it looks good go for it. It also depends on how much it rained & the last time, was there enough time for crap to build up in the streets & washes. Jamie said he's gone right after it rains & hasn't got sick.

It depends on location as well. With the Santa Ana and San Gabriel rivers dumping, O.C. will not be good. Palos Verdes, at least upstream from White Point is usually not bad. I've had some of my best dives during rainstorms and the day after.

What are the Conditions at Redondo Beach Like after the rain? I will be in the San Pedro Area on Saturday 12/27 to take a Drysuit class in the morning. It will be the pool session. I was thinking about doing a couple of dives in Redondo after my class (of course in a wetsuit), probably around 1:30pm. I made a post at ocfundive.com/Forum.aspx?g=posts&m=2470#2470 but most of the divers live in Orange County like me. I have not received any replies yet probably because of the long drive and the rain.

dive safe,

Hey All, thanks for your comments. I have my dive buddy from Canada here with me over the holidays and it rained EVERY day since he arrived on Tuesday....hence the question.

We broke down and dove yesterday at Crescent North. Viz was 8-10 at best...not great.

We're going to Catalina today to make up for it this morning. Report (and HD Vids) to follow.

dive safe all,

Jeff

I'll be waiting.:uwphotographer:

Hey Frank, gonna have to wait a wee bit longer....viz was ****e today. I would say 8-10 with a couple 15 patches....awful day at the island.

If you like milky video I have a ton of that today!!!

:)

dive safe,

Jeff

From the air it seems to take about 2-3 days for the vis to clear up and the water to look 'clean'. During the first big storm of the season there are large rafts of trash that clumps together as it gets pushed down the river, then the drift off to the island of trash somewhere in the middle of the Pacific. It's sad to see.

ain't that the truth. I'm not even sure why this is an issue. It would be "so easy" to just dispose of your trash in a responsible manner. It's very disappointing to see people abuse our environment because of sheer laziness or lack of intelligence. On almost every dive I find something on the bottom that doesn't belong there. But I have seen divers pick up something off the bottom...look at it...and just put it back down....why not just put it in your pocket and get rid of it back on shore....</end rant>
