Ohio tourist dies during shipwreck dive off Pompano Beach
POMPANO BEACH -- An experienced diver from Ohio died after he
collapsed on the ocean floor during a deep shipwreck dive Tuesday, deputies said.
Alan Klepacz, 51, of Swanton, Ohio, was diving with a chartered group to the Captain Dan in water about 110 feet deep about a mile offshore, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office. When he reached the ship, he collapsed to the ocean floor, deputies said.
His dive buddy took Klepacz up to the charter boat and marine patrol deputies were called. He was pronounced dead about an hour later at North Broward Medical Center.
Investigators do not yet know how Klepacz died, but thought it ``very possible'' he suffered a heart attack or other health problem during the dive, said sheriff's spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright.
The Broward Medical Examiner's Office is performing an autopsy.
