Betty, do you have the manual on the Gekko? It's my memory that my Suunto manuals had extensive sections showing the various screen displays under different circumstances. That way, you would have a chance to familiarize yourself with the display without having to figure out how to get the computer to show it.

Another real easy way to put your computer into deco is to do a dive on 32% and not tell the computer you're on Nitrox. The computer will show you in deco long before you actually have an obligation.

....My Gekko computer manual explains what happens to the computer when the decompression limit has been ignored and the dive becomes a decompression dive...Now I can read the manual several times and try to memorize its content but should I deliberately put myself into a decompression dive in order to fully understand what the text in the manual means or it is a foolish exercise?

As someone mentioned already, in Module 7, Section 4 of the Gekko online class we show (video) how the Gekko behaves when in deco. The class costs 500 BC (equivalent to $4.95). If you recently purchased the Gekko, you might be able to get the class Activation Code from the dive store.

Additionally, you can use our eDiving scuba diving simulator to take the Gekko in deco as much as you want .... and no one gets hurt :D

......DiveNav has an on-line course for the Gekko. ....... It does have a section on exceeding NDL and since they are a dive simulator company I'd expect it would display exactly what your computer would in a real-world situation.

Yes it does.

The simulator is definitely the way to do this rather than putting the computer into deco mode on a real dive using various machinations.

I think vladimir made a wonderful suggestion. Kick up the personal conservatism and put your computer into deco. I apologize for not thinking of this earlier. If you want to, you could also dive nitrox with tables while the computer is set for air. Essentially, you'll get the experience of using your computer in deco without excessive nitrogen loading.

As I said before, I really hope that you can appreciate how conservative Suunto computers are. If you have the opportunity, dive with someone using a Pelagic computer (brands: Oceanic, Sherwood, Aeris, Genesis)...or borrow one such computer and compare it to your Gekko throughout the dive. You'll see what I mean.

Thanks. I do like the Gekko despite what some folks think of it. My primary buddy's second computer is an Aladin. He keeps comparing the two at the end of every dives. He likes for the only reason that he can download the dives in the computer. He still has problems in understanding how it works.

@Soakedlontra: My gf uses a Gekko. She downloads her profiles to her Mac using a Suunto download cable and the software MacDive. The developer for MacDive recently transitioned the software from donationware to regular fee ($25). Works great with no modifications required. This is also possible if you use a PC. SB has several threads on how it's done. Here's a link to one of them. Essentially, you run a program that tricks Suunto Dive Manager into thinking that your Gekko is a Vyper (from which dive profiles can be downloaded to PC).

PC downloadability is an "unadvertised" feature of the Gekko.

Well that's up to Sambolino44. He did not buy the Aladin, he won it. I figure he doesn't really need to go through that trouble. Thanks anyway for letting us know!
