I was wondering if anyone might have some insight to an interesting problem that I have been encountering.

During my very first dive, I learned how easy it was to burp through a regulator. How fun! Yes fun at first then I noticed that my frequency for having to do so increasing. I found mysefl burping quite alot. Not that people were starrring or anything, but it made me wonder, is this normal? I thoguht gas was supposed to dissolve at depth not expell? The other thing that has been happening in conjuction with this is that while in the water I feel a pressure at the bottom of my sternum sometimes. Like a burp that just wont get out. I am able to burp though when I get my stomach out of the water.

Just wondering if anyone has had any of the same problems and what they did. I know one solution is to watch that I dont eat gassy foods, but is there something else I should be doing?

Thanks

Whoa:11: ease off on that pre-dive chilli otherwise you'll be blowing bubbles from both ends!;)

I'll leave it up to others (Dr. Deco care to touch this one) to respond but I'd imagine you should avoid gassy foods before a dive....

I know some foods will do that to me. I'm pretty careful what I eat for breakfast before I go diving.

I agree, I eat i light meal before i go and then something, after and that usually clears up the gassy problem

other than that i have no idea how to fix your problem, like Divegolfski said, i'll leave that to someone who knows what there talkin about.

If you tend to equalize your ears by swallowing, it is a common side effect to swallow some air. Do that at depth & when you ascend it expands & has to come out. It can leave you feeling nauseaus on the surface. I recommend that you don't swallow to equalize in order to avoid this.

Yeah, it sounds like you're swallowing air.

Ya, I burp too.
Eating light and eating nothing right before I dive seems to help.

The funny thing is that I am not much of a surface burper. I think a good share of my diving burps must be caused by swallowing to try and get some moisture in my throat or possibly just nerves.

Anyway, not a big problem for me. Just another method of buoyancy control. :D

I like to drink soda water during the SI -- you WILL burp then :)

Is that why some divers allow only one beer between dives? :beerchug:
