What is the best form of currency to use in Coz? Peso, US $ or Credit Card? What do the restaurants typically take?

BTW, For the folks staying at the Blue Angel, I'll be the guy with the Red Wings Cap!! Look forward to talking over some brown pops.

The Blue Angel is priced in dollars. We charge all meals and drinks to the room as well as any diving related stuff, then settle the bill using Travelers checks. We tip DM's, maids, waiters, etc. in dollars, but you could use pesos if you wish.
For taxi's I would use pesos only.
The few restaurants I used took either dollars or pesos, but I prefer to use pesos.

I take a Debit card. Once on the island I find an ATM and get Pesos. This way I get the bank exchange rate (along with a small fee). This tends to be a better deal. On the east side of the island. well, they usually give you about 10 pesos to the dollar so you can be damn sure I have a pocket full of pesos before I go over there.

If you are eating out much or using taxis using pesos may save you money. Most business will take either currency. The problem comes with the exchange rate they use. Its not a standard number. They can use any rate they choose to. Some exchange at 10:1 others up to 12.5:1 maybe even a little better. The cambios were at just under 12:1 when I was there in August. Mega offered a 12.5:1! If you eat out and buy a few things, the up to 25% difference can add up. We like to know exactly how much we are spending so we use the ATM at the Santander Bank on 10 or the airport. We use Bank of America and so far, the costs have been minimal to do this or buy something at Mega pay in US dollars and get the change back in pesos.

We dove with German Yañez of Yucatech Expeditions. He was one of the original people to map out the cenotes in the 90's. He's a teacher at the university on Cozumel and his highly highly knowledgeable about the cenotes. Here is his email german@yucatech.net
