I have just purchased an Oceanic Pro Plus 2.1 but it doesn't come with the PC connect cable. I have looked online and found the cable for approx $90. Have also seen a number of reviews saying the connection to the DC is a pretty poor design. Would like to know if there is an alternative out there other than the $90 USB cable or if the benefit is worth the cost.
I recently purchased a used VEO 2.0 and attempted to cobble together a cable on my own; it appears to be a simple 3 wire RS232 serial com port that then goes into a serial to USB adaptor. The problem I found is that the first thing the Oceanic software looks for is the Oceanic ID on the USB connection, no ID: program locks. I lack the skill in hacking the software so unless you can overcome this or find 3rd party generic software; it looks like the Oceanic cable is the only game in town. The cable is very over-priced; if you can find a work around I would appreciate any info on it.
I bought one when I first got my PP 2.1 as I wanted to download all my dives. It also shows actual SAC rate too which is handy. Its expensive but I was happy with the results.
Its connection to the dive PC is poor in that you have to hold it in the computer while downloading. With the VEO the same cable plugs into a hole so cant fall out. Why they didn't do this with the PP 2.1 I don't know but its a stupid design. Pity as I love the computer as such. Good size screen and logical layout and easy to use.
Be sure you get the correct cable. The cable for the PP 2.0 is NOT the same as the one for the PP 2.1. It is WAY too expensive for what it is but it works after you cuss and throw a fit the first few times because if you are not paying attention it is quite easy to try and attach (I use that term loosely, as is the connection) the cable in the wrong orientation.
Once you figure it out you'll love the data you receive. I suggest getting Diving Log 5.0. It is way easier to use, you can customize your log book the way you want and even customize printed pages if you want to stick them in a binder. The support for Diving Log 5.0 is also very good.
