Hi,

I have just bought the above reg from my local dive shop. I had a question about the hose config. I notice on the first stage 2 of the LP ports ( at the rear ) are marked with "R" ..... what does this mean ? My octo is connected to one of these and my primary second stage is not, is this correct ?

Reason I am asking is the reg doesn't breath as easy as I would expect ..... a lot of the time I dive with the adjuster on the second stage fully open ...

Thanks for your help.

John

I am pretty sure that the "R" indicates the higher flow port, but I don't think it makes much difference. I have had my primary coming off of the front port then switched it to the back when I went to a long hose and couldn't tell the difference.

It should be an easy breathing reg. My second stage will freeflow (even out of water) with the adjustment all the way out. It takes about a turn and a half to stop it from freeflowing.

Will yours freeflow with the adjustment all of the way out? Do both second stages (octo) breath tough? If they both breath hard then the IP may be set too low on the first stage. If the octo breathes fine and it is only the primary second stage it can also be adjusted to breath easier by a technician or someone who doesn't mind messing with it.

It's a good reg and may have sat on the shelf long enough to need an adjustment...or may have been tuned before it was given to you and the seats have worn in a bit requiring another adjustment. Never had the problem with mine, but it was used and already broken in.

Thanks for the reply.

I have had it freeflow once when on the surface ... but generally it doesnt freeflow even when completely open. The occy breathes pretty well. It sometimes made a bit of a wheezing sound when breathing ..... I spoke to a tech about it, and he said that was because it was brand new, and would take a bit of time for the high pressure to wear in.

I also called oceanic australia direct and asked a tech there. He said that the recommended config was to have the primary attached to the rear "R" port ... but having them the other way round was also fine, as on the CDX5 all 4 LP ports are equal.

All said, the reg is by no means difficult to breathe .... I will give it a few more dives and see how it goes.

This is just a WILD guess, but I'd bet it stands for Reserve aka RAS (reserve air source). This is a logical guess since your octo is "plugged in" to one of those ports but the primary is not.

Just Q. you mean fully open clockwise or counter clockwise ? My wife and I we both use them and they breath very easily.
