Im looking to buy my first computer this spring because I am sick of renting them. I am in love with the Atomic Cobalt, but I also like the wrist mount with the Atom 2.0. I am really leaning towards the Cobalt because I feel it is ahead of it's time. Suggestions?

Flip a quarter?

It really depends on your preference for a wrist mount vs a console. I already have something on my wrist, i.e., my lucky watch (100+ dives and haven't drowned once!), so I prefer a console.

That and I'm in love with my Cobalt.

Or you could wait a year, probably longer, to see if Atomic releases a wrist mount version.

I would wait, but I need a computer now. Im tired of throwing money away into rentals that suck. I'm sure they will come out with a wrist mount, but it took them long enough to come out with this one, I bet it takes them at least 2 more years. Worst case scenario, I could always have two computers; one as a backup, let a friend use it, or even sell it. What, if any, are the cons to the cobalt (aside from it being a console?)

Well, since I bought two of them, one for my wife, I'm probably not the person to ask about the cons, lol.

My biggest complaint isn't with the computer itself but that Atomic didn't include some sort of case or sleeve. Obviously, this is an easy fix but for $1,200 you'd think AA would have provided some sort of case protection. My understanding is they're now working on a sleeve and hope to have it out soon.

And the software's been "coming soon" for months now.

You should check out this thread: ScubaBoard > The Equipment of Scuba Diving > Computers, Gauges, Watches and Analyzers > Atomic Aquatics Cobalt Dive Computer.
Here's the link: Atomic Aquatics Cobalt Dive Computer.

I suggest starting at the last page and working backwards since the thread started before the computer was released. You'll find a lot of info there that should help you decide.

The Atomic is really a luxury purchase. If you just want a solid rec computer to offset rental costs, pick up a Puck, Zoop or Veo IMO. Quarter the cost and does the same stuff. I personally have an Atomic but I am a gear *****. My previous computer was a Puck and it was plenty for my diving needs but unfortunately I love playing with new toys.

Oh nothing wrong with the Atom but I personally find it a bit small for my old eyes.

I have a toy problem too. And I am a bit of a Gear snob myself. I was told once I first started diving to only the 'buy the best when you can afford it.' Otherwise, you will end up with closet full of sh*t. I have taken that literally and put a lot of thought in to every bit of equipment I have purchased.

*I am grateful for the responses so far. Keep em coming

That is a really tough choice. Everybody has a preference. And none of them are wrong. I'm the opposite of Scott L. I had a console, went to a wrist and hated it, and am back to a console. Personally I'm really hard on things on my wrist. I tear them up something awful.

In these 2 computers you are really comparing Apples and Broccoli, though. The only real similarity is that they both are good dive computers. The Atom is a smaller, compact wrist-watch style computer. It packs all the features of an Oceanic computer into fairly small case. Its well thought out, with a fairly common sense display and allows you to read up to 3 different transmitters and up to 3 different nitrox mixes. It's a fantastic choice for a worrisome parent or spouse.

The Cobalt is using some newer technology and features amazingly vibrant colors with its OLED screen. It can be viewed easily from almost any angle. It packs a very intuitive digital compass and is one of the easiest to navigate menus designed for scuba computers. Literally laid out like a DVR remote. It also boasts a rechargeable lithium Ion battery that offers pretty good battery life off a single charge and can be recharged through a USB adapter or using the AC Adapter.

As a newer diver, generally speaking my reccomendation would be along everybody else's. Get a more inexpensive computer first. It will do all the things you NEED a computer to do and many of the other features these 2 more expensive ones will do for you. It'll also free up a little bit of money to work towards some of the gear you'll wish you had next, such as a nice regulator, bcd, and/or suit.

I am a new diver. I chose to go with the Cobalt. My rationale was that I really like the features the computer has that i can take advantage of immediately and the more advanced features will be helpful as I become more proficient. And I also figured that since that is the computer I like, I would only be wasting money by buying a different computer and then turning around in a year and getting the Cobalt anyway. I've never been real big on spending money twice. The other factor is that it is very easy to read under water especially since my reading glasses don't fit very well under my mask. :)
