I agree with DD . I enjoy hotel coz- the AI is only 15 bucks a day so we eat in town every night. We also enjoy hanging around in town more than hanging at the resort. The long boat rides don't bother me, but being stuck at a resort because it's a $40 round trip to town does. Be back in november .

The folks actually responsible for their tactics, you will never see. I say "no, gracias" before they even get into their pitch, break eye contact with a smile, and walk away. BS. I've long since given up being the gracious tourist to some lying time share hawk who won't take no for an answer. No Gracias and a smile to a Mexican time share hawk doesn't mean no to them.

99% of the time they aren't even listening to you reply to them. Pay attention next time and say "Bumble bee" or "Potato" to them, they aren't listening to your response, they keep going "Hey Amigo, where you staying... where you staying.... blah blah blah".

They aren't listening to your response, you're fooling yourself if you think you're having a conversation with a time share hawk. They see you coming they start unloading the speal as you approach, as you get close to them they are still babbling and as you walk on by they are still talking to your back. You're nothing but a number to them. I've long since moved on for feeling sorry for ole Pedro and thinking he is just trying to make a living. This isn't a war veteran missing his legs, it's a time share hawk targeting a gringo to separate him from his money and time.

What are you guys doing, shaking hands and patting all 10 of them on the back, giving out hugs to them all at the airport? No gracias amigo, hey... looking good.... nice one... almost had me... hey, good one, you too, yep, 8th time was almost the charm! No gracias...

screw that, just walk on by them and let them babble on, they will quickly forget you in half a second as the next gringo victim appears.

This is pretty standard stuff. First they appeal to your greedy side; if you take something for nothing, they have you on the hook and it's your own fault. If that doesn't work they try to guilt you. If you show the slightest sign of weakening, they will hammer away at it. Again, it's your choice.

Actually that works well for me. You might look like more of a target. If No thanks doesn't work, then go for whatever does work - sure, as long as it doesn't ruin your own mood.

I've found Cozumel to have the most aggressive hawkers of anywhere I've been. Walking around downtown one stepped in front of us forcing us to stop, usually they just yell at you. The airport is just as bad, I have to give Coz the edge in this regard over Cancun. I've had more fun in the airport in Cancun but that was because we've rented cars in the 3 times we've been there. The government could simply stop allowing them in the airport but I guess the mordita is just too good.

I've been approached about time shares many times and have never had a problem. In fact, I've had a few really nice conversations with some of the guys after I've explained that I'm not interested. There aren't any at my hotel of choice, Casa del Mar, but the Park Royal actually has people out on the street at times. The airport people get a quick "No Thank You" as I walk by, but the others get a "no" with a little explanation that it's just not for me. Maybe it's my approach? I'm not stern with them, I'm friendly and I smile, which is easy to do if you're on Cozumel. Maybe the dozen or so that have approached me were just nice guys?

I've never agreed to a meeting, but I can imagine that the dramatics in one of those could approach the level of drama you'd see on a Mexican soap opera. SNL should do a skit.
It makes me chuckle just thinking about it.

On one of our visits, we had a friend along who blew out his flipflop (Yes, he stepped on a pop top....). We took him to Mega. A very nice lady with a blue vest asked to help him and took him to the shoes and helped him pick and then led him to a register. Then she met him on the other side and tried to get him on a tour. She was slick and helpful. She took no pretty well too.
