Several years ago my wife and I dived in Oahu with Reef Trekkers. She was just certified and they took us on a couple of dives that only very experienced divers should do. In my opinion, they were the worst, and most dangerous, dive operators we've ever experience in Hawaii, the Carribean, Asia and southern Africa. Also, Honolulu was a horrible place; clearly not the "paridise" it may have once been. I swore I'd never go back to Oahu. Having said that, my son is going to Oahu in July to be married so I suppose I should go. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to quality dive operators and dive sites.

I'd love to give you some advice for Oahu (lived there for 8 years), but it looks like you have already made up your mind that it is gonna suck.

At the time of year you are going the North Shore is usually really good. Sharks Cove and Three Tables are easy shore dives. I really don't care for Hawaii diving that much as far as topography goes but there are endemic species that are found no where else in the world. Three Tables always had turtles and it is the only place I have seen a Dragon Moray. You could also try Pray for Sex beach at Yokohama Bay, another good shore dive.

I was just in Oahu and dove with Gabe's crew (Kaimana Divers: SCUBA Diving in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, Waikiki). I did a total of 6 dives with them and was very happy with the experience; two dives with Drew, two dives with Anna, and then took some friends on a resort course with Gabe (two shallow dives).

Gabe doesn't have his own boat but will set you up to go with an experienced DM on a boat that suits the conditions and with a small group (in my case, I dove once with 1 other diver plus the DM, once with just the DM, and once with a group of 6 including me that I'd put together). He's responsive via email and can help you plan your dives somewhat in advance (conditions permitting).

I had a great time diving with them and would recommend them.

Whoever you dive with in Oahu, if you object to them touching wildlife you might ask about it before you dive. I found that it seemed routine for operators in this area to catch Octopi so that the divers could play with them, which was very educational but probably bad for the animals.

Have fun
