novice/intermediate diver to advanced or rescue course

Hi. I am a fairly new diver but have a few dives logged. I am just wondering if anyone has an opinion on going almost straight from your check dives to going into an advanced or rescue diver course. I try to be a very dedicated diver but am fairly limited on when my dad can or cant dive. He thinks it is a little too early to start an advanced or rescue course and that i need some more dives. I see a point but in my opinion i think it would just make me a better diver in the first place. I am just curious to see what the rest of you think i should do.

I think advanced is fine after an OW - but would agree to get a little experience before moving on to an instense course as Rescue. As long as you feel comfortable with your experience level....I say go for it.

I teach for Scotsac rather than Padi, but our trainees learn rescue prior to ever entering the open water, and personally I think that it should be a pre-requisite for anyone diving independantly. I expect anyone I've trained to be able to do a basic lift and tow along with av/cpr before I'd sign them off as a sport diver. So yes, I'd go ahead and do rescue. AOW is different, you'd probably be better simply going along and diving in differing conditions/sites etc than paying out money to do exactly the same thing

Get your rescue course as soon a possible. Advanced is a waste of time but unfortunatly necissary to get to rescue.

As far as the AOW, it's up to you. Here's what I'd do; I would look into the requirements for my agency's AOW course. PADI, for example, requires both deep and advanced navigation as a core to your AOW. If your buoyancy and navigation skills are better than average for a diver with your experience, especially the former, I'd probably do the advanced, but only after consulting with my instructor. Otherwise, I'd probably take a Peak Performance Buoyancy (or the appropriate substitute if your agency is one other than PADI), before doing the AOW. Your buoyancy changes constantly, especially on a deep dive, so this, IMO, would be a good idea. As far as the rescue course, I'd definitely wait until I had several more dives before I did it.

AOW isn't always required to get into a rescue class.

PADI requires AOW or equiviland which is defined as some certification beyond OW and a minimum number (20 I think) of dives with experience in deep and nav. An EANX class and a bunch of dives would do fine.

IANTD requires AOW or proof of 10 logged dives.

my bouyancy is very good, and other than on the surface, my navigation is great underwater, im just curious and eager to learn more and get more experience.

I thikn that you should have few more dives before rescue. You should already know how to buddy breath and be comfortable donating air in an OOA (out of air) emergency. In rescue training you have to deal with panicked divers, etc and so you want to make sure that you are a good diver with good skills before you attempt to rescue someone else. Just my 2 cents.

I'd suggest getting more experience by diving on your own before you start AOW, it will give you a better perspective on what you want out of AOW and you'll get more out of it.

btw, how old are you, if you don't mind me asking?
