I'm running in a 5K Turkey Trot Thursday a.m.

Joyce and I will drive to Venice Friday and stay at the Hampton Inn on Venetia Bay Blvd. Friday and Saturday night. We will probably try to eat at Sharkey's Friday night.

Anyone else have similar plans, or an idea of a rendezvous somewhere?

I could PM my cell # in case anyone's interested.

The weather forcast looked promising last night. We might have a sunny Saturday.

Hey Brian.. it was pointed out to me that we're going to have company on Friday night and it would not be condusive for me to be out on the boat with company here local. :)

Weather permitting, I'll be there also. I'm planning on leaving Melbourne / St. Cloud early Sat morning and have room for Tag-A-Longs in the van. Will be coming back in the afternoon. I will not be diving due to still recovering from shoulder surgery, but am looking forward to meeting fellow Conch Divers.

Anyone got a cell number in case I get lost. I can get to I-75 pretty easy - the rest?

And how about posting the directions from I-75 on the 1st post!

Sorry, but I have to put out of the party!
Have the on-call phone and went from dead to busy this weekend so I have to be near a phone and computer.
I will be with you in spirit!

Sharky's sounds good. My arrival will depend on the weather. That's the way with sailboats. I will probably try to tie up at the Crow's Nest, if possible.

It sounds good. If I make it there by Friday night in time for dinner, meeting at Sharky's sounds like a good idea.

Weather still looks good.

Let's just hope that this wind we've been having the last couple of days dies quickly, so we can have some vis.

Is there any special equipment? What's a good collecting bag?

You can get a nice fine mesh bag at Florida SCUBA West in Venice or Fantasea in Port Charlotte, in a pinch, a sock works quite well, a glove is almost as good.

I read that this was a prehistoric river, but I wonder why all those critters landed here?

Any theories?

Sea level rises and falls. Then it's high, Florida is underwater and marine creatures leave their remains. When it's low, Florida is much larger than it is today and terrestrial creatures roam far out into what is now the Gulf of Mexico. When these animals die, they are sometimes fossilized. For this reason you'll find horse teeth next to shark teeth. Fossils are not more numerous off Venice Beach than in most other locations in Florida, they're just easier to find. We can find fossils in our back yards, including megalodon teeth. The problem is they aren't sitting on the surface. We have to dig for them. There are many paleontology clubs around the state, most of their members are not divers. They find fossils wading along the banks of rivers and streams, at construction sites and in quarries. This is because rivers, streams dig as they flow. Construction sites and quarries are places people are digging. This digging uncovers fossils. When sea level was lower, there was a river off what is now Venice Beach. Nothing mysterious about the fossils we find there.

thanks for the quick history lesson..I have found sharks teeth near Okeechobee, and somebody found a horse tooth last year near the Peace River....
When we did the fossiling last year with Mark Renz, he said Florida has been flooded 24 times.
