What sort of dive profiles were associated with this incident? Were they aggressive in any way? Did he use a computer that showed no violations?

Repetitive dives...not enough surface interval time...pushing the tables beyond the limits.

Did I miss something? Its not clear from Diverlady's description that the guy even did more than one dive!?!?

Is there an earlier part to this thread from before it was moved to this category?

Well that's presumptuous. How long of an SI did this diver have? What depths was he diving at? Did he exceed his computer's limits?

Were you there? No. I was.

My posting was to provide some information on this particular incident so hopefully people will learn something from it. Personally, I found the thumb and first 2 digits info quite interesting and thought others might too. I didn't post it to encourage people to make irrational statements based on conjecture. If you have questions, I'll be happy to try to answer them (without, of course, the benefit of having his computer in front of me, nor mine for that matter!) the best that I can.

Two dives on Saturday, two on Sunday.

Minumum 2 hr SI (both days but we'll just talk about Sunday). Actually longer. He was in the buddy team that went in (and out) right before me on the first dive on Sunday but then went in after me but surfaced before me for the second dive. I had more than a two hour SI so he would have had even longer. (I did not exceed my computer's limits.)

Diver was using a computer. He did not exceed "computer's" limits. First dive was on the Munson - max depth approx. 110ft. Second dive was on the Marsh - max depth approx. 80ft.
A quick glance at dive tables: it would appear that if he maxed his bottom time at 110ft with a 2hr SI, he would be a B diver for dive 2. That would give him approximately 20min at 80ft which sounds about right if I recall correctly what the first buddy team had reported. Now he had more than a 2hr SI so he might actually have been an A diver going in. (please correct me if I have erred)

We were wreck exploring so he wouldn't have gone deeper than me (by much anyway) without digging a hole in the bottom of the lake!

This diver is mid-to-late 40s, fit, non-smoker.

Was making a comment on an incident he had in the past, I think maybe one of us read this incorrectly...

Want to say thanks to DL for posting the info, as I was not aware of the "thumb and first 2 digits info", and as a result have updated my medical sheet/questionaire that I carry in my dive log book with me.

FYI
When a thread is moved, rarely if ever are posts removed. Posts are removed if the member does not follow the TOS.

((DL -- Friends and I are heading to Kingston next weekend, and just may be doing the exact same dives))

I would like it if a deco Dr would confirm what my friend was told about the thumb/finger thing. I would hate to be giving false info on that.

I preferred the Munson to the Marsh. We did the Davies on Saturday which I had never seen. I really liked that one!

If he was commenting on a personal experience, I would expect more details of the whole event including treatment and final outcome. That would be quite informative and educational for all reading this thread especially since it would be a first-hand account. The statement seemed to me to be a generalization (been{bent} there, done that) of both his and my friend's DCS incidents as being careless. The presumption being that the SI was too short and limits were exceeded.

I would hope the post was not ment to be malicious towards you or your friend but perhaps that was the intent.

If so it is an opinion based in ignorance, an ignorance that in my opinion is rampant in the industry...

DCS incidents are often looked on as something to be embarassed of and although in isolated instances this may be the case many times there is no direct mistake or cause.

Many times during deep diving or decompression diving in the military someone would either have a symptom or perhaps even just not feel right after a dive. That is why there is a recompression chamber required on the side. No big deal, if there was a chance it could be DCS then the person was treated.

I wish folks would take the time to learn a bit more about the injury itself and not rush to judgement when someone does get bent that they should be embarassed by the incident.

I am more scared of the number of folks out there who failed to mention a symptom because of this attitude and run the risk of having a permanant injury due to stupid pride...

How is your friend doing now? Have you heard anything?

Please wish him well and do not be discouraged by any stupid comments you see on this site, most of us really appreciate the information...

Choking can lead to the same reaction. People who are choking are often found in the bathroom as they are embarrassed by it.

I wish more people who get bent would provide info too. I'm sure there are many cases where limits were not exceeded etc.
His profile was at least the same as, if not more conservative, than mine for that day so clearly other factors contributed.

It's good that there is a chamber right there for military divers. Might as well go for the ride than take a chance. My friend was put on O2 immediately by the DMs who weren't interested in taking any risks either. One of the DMs repeatedly asked him to go to the hospital and offered to go with him.

I'm glad my friend took the time to send me (and several others on the charter) the info about his hit and treatment. He could very easily have kept it to himself.

I would like to know as much as possible about DCS so I can recognize it in myself and maybe help someone else.

I e-mailed him today but have not yet received a response. Hopefully, all is well.

Thanks, rmediver2002.
