Yes, the Descent. When I saw it and a Teric at a show the Teric display was much nicer, higher contrast and brighter. However outside it might be different. I know I have to shade my perdix while doing stuff at the surface, like setting gases, on a sunny day and it looks like that is still true of the Teric. The bloke with the Teric wasn't there the day I got my hands on a D5 so I have't been able to compare them directly, just a Perdix via the D5.

For someone who wants a watch style computer and unlikely to want CCR or trimix the D5 looks like a reasonable choice. Again battery life will be key, but I don't see that it should be worse than the Garmin, perhaps better without GPS to run. Still quite expensive compared to a 'normal' computer.

I didn't realize the d5 can't do trimix till you said that. I haven't looked at it, or the Garmin yet.

My 22yrs old Uwatec Aladin Pro-nitrox is still functioning and if I need to replace it I won't spend more than US$200.00 for a replacement.
I dive and travel a lot in SE Asia and I can't remember the last time that I met a diver using it!
There are plenty alternatives at a fraction of the cost.

I don't think there are ANY apples vs. apples alternatives at a fraction of the cost. That's applies not just for SW, but for almost any computer out there. There all have the bells and whistles, pros and cons, with the associated pri-tag attached.

Just sold my pristine used Geo2 for less than that ... yup, sure is a different apple!

You would not but some people would including myself. I recently upgraded my computer. I had an old Suunto Solution Alpha - which is my back up now - and got a PerdixAI. People pay $1500 for an iPhone. Every year....a device that will not save their lives....

I can afford to buy whatever I decide I need, so cost isn’t a big deal, getting value and utility for my money is my concern. I’m a newbie, considering whether just to keep renting a computer, or buying one that I can get familiar with. I’ll probably never venture beyond recreational diving on air, realistically. Sure diving is fun, but it’s a means to an end for not an end in itself. I just enjoy being underwater and seeing the ecology. I can do that at fairly shallow depths, and I’m fine with that. So, what kind of dive computer is best? Something ultra, simple and intuitive cost is not a factor. Appropriate for what I need it for. Preferably including AI because that is convenient. Thanks!
