My ability to clear my ears has greatly improved to my open water certification dives however I still get a small amount of blood in my mask when I ascend Once I get pass 16 fsw I equalize up to 100'. Any suggestions?

Please describe how you are equalizing your ears...in detail.

Do you experience any pain above your eye and/or in the forehead region during descent or ascent?

Do you ever have a bloody nose outside of diving? If so, when?

Nose bleeds are common in new divers. Don't worry, they will stop happening after a few dives.

It could be that you are not equalizing your mask often enough on descent, if you let your mask squeeze you it can rupture the smaller and weaker blood vessels in your nose. Also if your sinuses get a bit blocked then as you ascent the pressure can cause a small tear which results in you bleeding from the nose.

If its caused by one of these problems then it should stop bleeding pretty much as soon as you get out the water or shortly after.

I have worked with blood in the lab. Blood has all sorts of red pigment in it (hemoglobin). So it does not take much blood to look very impressive. It only takes a few drops of blood to tint a cup of water pretty decidedly. If you are getting just a "small amount", you are probably having very little indeed. It is probably not a matter of concern.

maybe your pinching your nose too hard

You might have to live with it-----I have nose bleeds ~80% of the time for over the last 20 years+ during/after dives....Sometimes gets a DM 'upset' the 1st time he sees your mask full of blood---other than that, no problem for me.....
