I am looking forward to visiting California for the first time this June; it will be a family vacation, but I have four consecutive days to dive. There are two options I am considering and I would appreciate your local insight regarding which of these two options is likely to produce the best experience. Expense-wise, the two options appear to be a wash. By way of background, I am an intermediate diver (dive wet) and do most of my diving in the cold water environs off Massachusetts/NH/Maine. My goals for CA diving would be to do the Kelp Beds, see some of those colorful nudis, and, if possible, see some sea lions U/W.
The first option is to do four single day boat dives with the Spectre out of Ventura. Destination would be Northern Channel Islands (looks like mostly Anacapa). To do this, I will need to rent a car since the family will be based in Carlsbad; this would entail some lengthy drive times. I would plan to sleep on the boat.
The other option is a three day liveaboard with Horizon Charters out of San Diego. Potential destinations listed are Catalina, Santa Barbara, San Clemente, and Cortes Bank (the latter only if conditions are ideal). Although I would like to pick up a fourth day to do Wreck Alley, it looks like that would be difficult based on the schedules I see for other SD boats online (since the open day is a Thursday.)
So: What would you do?
Thanks in advance.
