The northern islands are way better IMHO. Go out on a single or multi day trip on the Peace or one of the Truth Aquatics boats to the outer islands. There you will see way more diversity and the best diving that California has to offer. The Peace is my favorite boat because of the crew and food like you wouldn't believe. Truth aquatics boats are also very nice. They will both take you to great dive sites. I would get on a multiday and drive up the night before and sleep on the boat, avoiding the LA traffic.
