Back in the spring of 2001, as DIR was slowly gaining in popularity, two DIR divers from New England realized that there was a distinct lack of resources available on the net that dealt with applying DIR style of diving to the North East of US and other similar locales. A general lack of acceptance by local divers of a style of diving many still associated with warm-water caves made for some difficulties in making DIR diving better known in these parts. Yet, enough of the local divers have apparently expressed interest that the site, NorthEast DIR, and an associated mailing list were created to help bring DIR diving to the North East. The site's and the mailing list's intent was always to be an informational resource on applying DIR style of diving to New England and other places with similar conditions. Detailed photos of gear configs specific to cold-water diving, and numerous other local resources made up the site.

A few months ago, due to various reasons, that site went offline. When that became known, a number of people expressed interest in preserving the content of the site in one form or another. At that time myself and Eric Fine, another local diver, contacted the owners of the original site and offered to take it over, provided we continue to maintain the site as a local informational resource. After a couple of months' worth of straightening out of various logistical details and work on rebuilding the site, we're excited to say that NorthEast DIR is back, albeit with some changes. The most notable is that due to circumstances beyond our control the website's address changed slightly, from '.com' to '.org'. The new address is:

http://www.northeastdir.org

So for those of you that still have it bookmarked with the '.com' extension, be sure to update your bookmarks accordingly. The look of the website changed as well. Some of the original content such as gear photos, was preserved, and lots of new content and information will also be added in time. The site continues to be a work in progress, as we add new information and new sections to it. We have no plans to make the site into yet another forum, however, for those of you that are preparing to groan, "Not another one!"

The e-mail list, however, continues to be 'NortheastDIR' on Yahoo Groups, for the locals (and everyone else for that matter) among you with questions, announcements, or whatever else you'd like to share. If you'd like to subscribe, please visit:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Northeastdir/

All this said, we welcome your comments and please enjoy the site!
