It was a pretty safe bet that someone would ultimately ask for examples. That is usually how the flame wars begin.:eyebrow:

I'm all ears hot-shot.

Of course you've followed Dan's example and actually test drove it before making any rash decisions, right?

Just asking dude. You seem to be pretty sure of yourself with those assertions. Mind you, you are not alone in this thread of folks that claim to be adamantly not DIR, but have never looked beyond the front door. Kind of hard to tell from there I think.

It's not like a majority of the current DIR crew haven't walked in the same shoes as yourself prior to their ultimate decision. Most of us start out that way actually.

Just a thought, and this ain't flaming, it's asking pointed questions to a pointed comment of unsafe protocols, which incidently work exceedingly well.

Slap it in another thread if you wish, by all means. I want to hear his reasoning.

(X) Hogarthian diver

This is the term that is evolving for those divers who (1) think for themselves AND (2) embrace certain DIR concepts that are safe, having (3) discarded the particular un-safe DIR concepts.:D

To wit:

Safe DIR concepts ---

Long hose configuration as primary source / bungie necklace backup
Donation of primary
Streamlining for DPV use
Short solid fins
Spare mask
Minimal weighting
Horizontal trim
Absolutely no bottom silting
Etc.

Un-safe DIR concepts ---

Standard MOD mixes (vs best mix for MOD)
Standard deco mixes (vs customized mixes)
Snorkel abandonment for open water shipwreck diving
Lead-acid DPV batteries only (vs NiMH and/or LIon)
Single gauges per diver (vs backup bottom timer)
Diving in groups of 3 (vs buddy pairs)
Deco on the fly (vs pre-planned V-Planner deco)
Etc.

UHHH...could we make this a sticky?:D

It's already pretty sticky, to my concern ... just be careful not to step in it ... :shakehead:

A simple "non-DIR" would've sufficed ...

Yo momma!

(thats called cutting to the chase:eyebrow:)

Yep. And please, I don’t want this to turn into a debate on DIR – non-DIR.

That kind of conformity, for me, diminishes some of the fun and creativity. I simply do not dive in any extreme conditions that would warrant such rigid rules. If I did, well maybe I would take a closer look at DIR/GUE.
As a somewhat educated non-DIR diver, I'm not likely to be one to start a debate, as I like to think I understand both sides of "the argument" already. That said, I fail to see how anyone who understands the reasons for uniform gear configuration for dive teams would think it was "funny" just because their own diving may be more forgiving than what the system was designed for.

I don't think it's necessary for my diving either, but I don't get what's humorous about it.

I find it a bit funny (not in any way a ridicule) that in order to be considered DIR, I have to have the same gear configuration as everyone else I’m diving with.

I guess it brings to mind the quote from the movie “The Right Stuff” when the Mercury astronauts were inspecting the capsule/spacecraft and they wanted a window with a exploding bolt hatch. To which the German scientist said, “You don’t understand – this is the final version!”

Everybody thinks their way is the right way at some point. And at some point they may have been right. For me, I like trying new things, you never know when some guy will invent SCUBA.
