I find it a bit funny (not in any way a ridicule) that in order to be considered DIR, I have to have the same gear configuration as everyone else I’m diving with.

Do you understand the reason for it?

Yep. And please, I don’t want this to turn into a debate on DIR – non-DIR.

That kind of conformity, for me, diminishes some of the fun and creativity. I simply do not dive in any extreme conditions that would warrant such rigid rules. If I did, well maybe I would take a closer look at DIR/GUE.

I also wonder how many people who responded to the poll assumed "non-DIR" meant "anti-DIR"?

:-)

RJP.... I perl. hope not....was not intended in that spirit....just had to deferenchate the styles/philosophies..... and tried to create a slot for the folks in-between. No winners or losers....just a light spirited poll....a non scientific finger on the SB pulse. ;)

I conceder myself a "PIC" Diver, because I Perform It Correctly. :)

Having not taken Fundies yet, I hesitate to call myself a DIR Diver. However, I am doing as much as I can right now to dive the DIR philosophy, and it's something to which I aspire.

LOL. And other tech divers dive for the hate of it?
No more than non-DIR divers are doing it wrong! :D

I am most decidedly NOT anti-DIR either.

I chose "other". My open-circuit configuration (singles and doubles) is DIR-compliant.

I embrace the team philosophy, health aspects, etc.

I can live without the acolytes.

But, mostly I dive CCR these days (hey, I can actually afford the Helium that way!), which
I suppose puts me squarely in the non-DIR category. Whatever.

(X) Hogarthian diver

This is the term that is evolving for those divers who (1) think for themselves AND (2) embrace certain DIR concepts that are safe, having (3) discarded the particular un-safe DIR concepts.:D

To wit:

Safe DIR concepts ---

Long hose configuration as primary source / bungie necklace backup
Donation of primary
Streamlining for DPV use
Short solid fins
Spare mask
Minimal weighting
Horizontal trim
Absolutely no bottom silting
Backplate, wing, & webbing harness with metal buckle and metal keepers
Etc.

Un-safe DIR concepts ---

Standard MOD mixes (vs best mix for MOD)
Standard deco mixes (vs customized mixes)
Snorkel abandonment for open water shipwreck diving
Lead-acid DPV batteries only (vs NiMH and/or LIon)
Single gauges per diver (vs backup bottom timer)
Diving in groups of 3 (vs buddy pairs)
Deco on the fly (vs pre-planned V-Planner deco)
Shutting down the right post first (vs the isolator first)
Etc.
