Except a moderator can't read every thread as it starts. I've said this earlier - I think there's a huge difference between asking about DIR's philosophy related to (split fins/cameras/pony bottles/Air 2's/poodle BC's etc) and saying something like "I will be doing a DIR trip and will require the DIR chicken and rice so as to not upset the normal gastric flora and potentially place my jejunum out of trim. "

It's called 'tongue in cheek' humor - I'm NOT saying I necessarily agree with it - in fact I don't feel it belongs here at all. But if we eliminate all off-the-cuff remarks altogether the forum will become awfully quiet.

There is definitely a line drawn, and it's up to the mods to determine exactly when a post/poster has crossed it......

I think you have to look at the history of the person trolling the thread. I the case of the thread that boogie quoted, the thread starter made very inflamatory statements regarding DIR, GUE, Mr. Irvine, Mr. Jablonski and the proponents of the DIR approach in past threads. Therefore, it was pretty easy to determine if his thread was a troll or a serious question.

I am pretty confident the trolling will have to be flagrant to require a time out.

On the other hand, many people have already made up their mind as to how they are going to dive, and DIR is not a possibility. This forum was not intended to provide a place for a disgruntled few to wax philosophical on why they disagree with the DIR philosophy. It is inetended for DIR divers to discuss their protocols and for non-DIR divers to learn more about what those protocols entail. No agency bashing has been one of our goals for a long time.

Depending on the abuse level, we can ban from the entire board or just from the DIR section. It's our choice, and as always, no one gets banned by only one vote. We all discuss the relative merits of such behind the scenes. It may appear that only one person is taking action, and unfortunately I wish there were more than one switch... but there isn't and so a corporate action may appear to be individual in nature. I have been accused of exactly the same thing in the past.

'jejunum' into dive chat might deserve a little slack.

I'm certainly no fan of trolls, but there are blatantly crude attempts to incite flamefests and generate disruptive posts (ala Lawman and his ilk) and there is cynical/sarcastic humor.

I'd be prone to be a little more tolerant of someone attempting the latter. But it all boils down to a judgement call...

That's why they have refs at basketball games to decide the difference between a 'hack' and 'aggressive defense'...

If the mods think it's a junk post, then pull it. We'll most likely survive the deletion.

Agreed!

There are no other Forums on the board that have to do with ba specific agancy. Ther is no PADI, NAUI,SSI/TDI. or any of the other agancies. So why a DRI/GUE forum? If there were other forums for the agencies ther would be nothing but agancy bashing going on in them. By having a spcific forum for DIR you are asking for nothing but bashing. If you ask a questionable question and are deamed to be Trolling you get banned. So here is what I suggest. Get rid of the forum and if that's not possible then do like I do and ignore the forum. Pretend it don't exists . I'm not Pro DIR and there is nothing I can learn from the forum anyway. By going to it it only serves to cause advise feeling toward the rest of the forums. And the rest of the forums are a great asset to all of us divers to exchange info, find dive buddies, and make friends.
Argueing on the internet over somthing like DIR is Stupid and I for one will no longer waste my time doing so. This will be my last post in the DIR forum. For me this forum no longer exist.

Have fun diving reguardless of what agency or methord you chose to use.

Fred,
I don't think the point of the DIR section is to incite agency bashing. Furthermore, I don't believe that it's unfair towards the other agencies to have this thread. Prior to the "new" Scubaboard, there was no DIR section. However, many questions on DIR have been posed and many good discussions took place....it's all about supply and demand. There was a demand for this thread and Scubaboard made it happen. Keep in mind that DIR and GUE have a different approach to diving which, in itself, makes it unique. Just as Tech diving has it's own section, so does DIR. I see nothing wrong with adding a section which may clatify certain questions. But I guess you have already closed your mind to reading some of the posts in this thread. It's your loss. Best of luck finding the answers you seek.

Like nauifins73, I am hesitant to comment or ask questions without a guideline as to what constitutes trolling. It appears to be standard operating procedure on the board, TOS notwithstanding. Even in this thread:

Boogie711:
……. DIR's philosophy related to (split fins/cameras/pony bottles/Air 2's/poodle BC's etc) and saying ……..

BCD, jacket BCD or stabjacket would be less controversial descriptions.

I’m not offended by such comments and don’t take people to task over such things. Frankly, I find humor a good salve for life’s rough edges. But a little guidance, perhaps right under the TOS, surely would be helpful to people trying to stay on the right side of the line.

If you would like to post a question to the DIR forum but are concerned that it might be considered a felony troll then by all means PM me and I will be happy to give all the help I possibly can.
